Center console flaking?

Anyone else see this, is this a defect I should attempt to resolve through warranty? Or suck it up I probably got something on it? My Summit is a year old and just hit 15kImageUploadedByJeepGarage1450814380.993279.jpg

Re: Center console flaking?

Never seen anything like that. Looks to me like it was chipped from something hitting it. You sure you didn't drop anything on it? I can't imagine a random part just flaking off. If you go to a dealership I guarantee they will say it was damaged by someone and not defective....which they would probably be right. Either gonna have to order a new console piece (might not be all that expensive from one of the online mopar parts stores), or if it doesn't bother you all that much touch it up and it should mostly blend in and not draw much attention.

Re: Center console flaking?

Thanks man, I thought about attempting to touch it up... Difficult to see in pic, but there are multiple gray color circles that I can tell are going to be next to flake off. It almost looks like I spilled something on it, and it is eating away at the finish. I had it at the dealer today and didn't say anything about it.

Zooming the image, looks like there is some discoloration in spots up to the lower left of the shifter cover. Can't tell if some sort of dissolving agent or factory flaw.

If you have a good relationship with your dealer, you might want to point it out and see if there is anything less than a full console cover to fix it.

A detailer might be able to carefully retouch it...

Re: Center console flaking?

There is a thread on here somewhere that a guy dropped some hand sanitizer on that area and it ate up the paint on it. any chance it was that?

Possibility.. I really don't recall spilling anything on it specifically, but I guess even if I had recently applied it to my hand, some could transfer.

Appreciate all the suggestions here.
It doesn't appear this is a common issue, so I must have gotten something on it... But still, pretty weak for it to eat away like that...

Thank you!!

Man that would bug the hell out of me. I would see if the dealership will replace it under warranty. If not I would replace it even if it cost me. But that 's just me!

Doubtful. I keep a sanitizer pump container in the forward cup holder and get it all over the place. No issues with console paint or wood finish on steering wheel.

I have a spot similar to that above my touch screen where the dash trim meets the dash board. On mine it looks like a spot was missed during the paint process. But i'm talking a spot the diameter of two sewing needles held together. Even along some of the edges the paint seems to gradually fade out. I guess its a cheap paint process at the factory.

Your spot looks more like something hit it and chipped the paint off. Does it feel like the paint is actually missing or is it smooth? Mine is smooth, almost like it was clear coated right over the spot.

Re: Center console flaking?

I read on another thread that an auto freshener was the culprit in doing this. I didn't have a liquid one, but I had a gel one in the cup holder. Maybe when I pulled it out some could have been melted and leaked out. If you look closely at the pic you can see several more gray spots. This was originally how the black spot was as well. After being unsuccessful full with a microfiber and cleaner,I attempted to lift the stain with my finger nail....and the copper turned to dust and left that black spot. I didn't even have a chance to go back and forth (good thing) It seemed like as soon as I touched it with my nail it was gone. Sucks...

Re: Center console flaking?

It's possible it is flaking off on its own, but more likely human factor was involved.

I had a small piece of chrome on the door lock flake off when I quickly wiped it with a cloth. That pissed me off considering I had literally owned the vehicle one day, but it cannot be seen and I'm the only one that can even tell it exists.

As for hand sanitizer, I use it constantly. I have been warned of its potential to damage surfaces and while it is logical, the reality is I have not have a single bit of damage to any surface across all of the cars I have owned.
