Changing Exterior Door handles ?

I just picked up all the parts to de-chrome my 2014 Limited...anyone out there have any experience with changing out their door handles?

Looks simple enough if you remove the door panels...but I'm wondering how much of a PITA it is to do?

if it's too much I'll bring it in to have it done...anyone popped off their door panels and changed the handles?

Thanks!

Re: Changing Exterior Door handles ?

Should be pretty easy to do as the door panels pop off nice and easy. If you have basic skills and tools you can tackle it no problem. I haven't removed the WK2 handles myself, but from doing other stuff I know its straight forward. I'm saying this because I would like to see you give it a shot yourself vs taking it to a place to have it done. Reason being is I always cringe at the thought of a dealership or some mechanic removing interior parts. When it comes to interior parts you really need to take your time as things can break or tabs, pushpins, connectors might not go back in properly. I say maybe attempt one of the rear doors yourself first, and if its not a problem go ahead and do the rest, if its not something for you then go ahead and have it done. Just inspect each door panel when they are done and make sure its seated correctly and no parts are protruding or loose or damaged.
Look through wk2jeeps.com there is probably a how-to on that site for door panel removal.

Goodluck with everything!

Oh and if you dont mind, where did you end up purchasing the handles and how much were they? I know each color varies a bit, but I think white ones from one of the online mopar retailers was something like near 300 or so.

once again I thank you for the help...tomorrow morning i am going to tackle the rear tail light bezels and the door handles...I will start with the rear doors to see how it works out

then if those go well I'll attempt the front doors

I just finished up changing out the rear emblem and step pad...only have to do the bezels for the rear ...I ordered the trufiber rear carbon step cover today so we'll see how that looks..I got the trufiber carbon mirror covers and they look fantastic...I may put those on tomorrow as well ..

Re: Changing Exterior Door handles ?

please post pics of the DIY if you end up doing it! read that you have to remove or lift the glass up to do the front, rear is easier and if you have small hands you dont even have to removed the inner panel to access the door handle.....

Re: Changing Exterior Door handles ?

I'll post some pics tomorrow but this is a total pita job

I was able to do the first rear handle in about 45 minutes..I took apart more stuff than I had to

The second rear door took me about 20 minutes

I took off the pass side front door panel and there's no way in hell in doing the front handles

The glass is in the way and the inner door panel needs to come off

I'm bringing it to the dealership to let them swap my front handles

My 2 rears are done ..and I'd say just about anyone can do these but the fronts are wayyyy harder

I bought my handles from quirk parts in true blue..that's my color

Cost me about 250$ for all 4 handles

I'm guessing it's going to be 300-400$ though to have the dealership install the fronts

Might be easier to just plasti dip or paint the chrome ones for cost effectiveness

Cost is worth it. Those blue handles will look great.

The door handles are my last major mod to my '15 Limited. I've popped the back panels off and they look easy. As mentioned above, the front ones are a whole different beast that I want no part of. I got quotes from quirkparts and allmoparparts and they were both cheaper with shipping included than justforjeeps. I even emailed justforjeeps to see if they would price match, but never heard back from them after 2 emails, so no business for them when I order. Got 3 sets of quotes for the handles install from local shops ranging from $150 per door to $80 per door.

Life has been busy, but i do plan to have this done in the next 2 months before the new year. Would like to do the rear myself and have the local shop do the front... Having surgery on my arm in 3 weeks though so might just have to have the shops do all 4 since I'll be out of commission for awhile. We'll see though!

Re: Changing Exterior Door handles ?

The rears are easy if you take your time

The front bolt is the tough one

There's a cut out to access the 2 rear bolts on the handle ..all you need is a couple screwdrivers and a couple small sockets ..no way I'm doing the fronts but I'd def recommend doing the rears yourself

I'll let you know what it cost me to have the fronts done ..

Re: Changing Exterior Door handles ?

I just talked to my Jeep dealer and they are going to change my 2 front handles for $236

I have an appointment for this Thursday to have them done

so all in all...I paid about 260$ for the 4 handles and will be 236$ in labor...so about $500 for all 4 ...not bad....it does look alot different already with just the 2 rear handles on..

Re: Changing Exterior Door handles ?

So here's some pics of the rear door assembly - its SUPER easy to take apart..as you will see in the pics..there is a small plate behind the handle that you pop out and then that exposes a screw and a bolt...take those 2 out and then you just remove the bolt that is underneath the little panel in the door armrest..

so 2 bolts and 1 screw....then use a flat head screwdriver to slide the power window switch up ..and out of the way...then unplug it ...and then just pull the whole outer door panel off. That exposes a small cover you need to remove to get to the 2 rear bolts for the handle off...and then you just reach up and in to get to the front bolt for the door handle. NO NEED to remove the inner door panel...I removed mine and then realized it didn't need to be taken off.

the only other thing you need to do is have a long screwdriver to pop off the retainer for the door rod...you'll see what I mean ...it's easy
