Chrome door handles

I was wondering if any one who has an extra chrome door handle laying around could check something for me. I was wondering how the chrome parts are attached to the rest of the assembly. Is it held on with clips, double sided tape or something else. I was just wondering if there was a way to remove just the chrome pieces without having to remove the handle assembly from the door. I would like to paint or wrap the chrome pieces and thought this would make it much easier. Thanks in advance

Re: Chrome door handles

Did some investigating and if you open your handle, on the end is a star shaped screw that can be removed. I think then you can pry the chrome piece off. It is pretty cold here so I did not want to try it and risk breaking a tab or something. The other piece I haven't figured out yet.

I have a set of chrome handles also(not on my jeep) ...and removed the little screw on the inside...BUT...the chrome part didn't seem to want to come off easily....plenty of people here have vinyl wrapped the handles on the vehicle and seem to be happy.

I myself just bought the painted handles and installed the rear ones myself...and had the dealership do the fronts..cost me about $500 all in..

I think vinyl wrapping them would cost you less than $100 for all of them ...after looking at my chrome handles and prying at them I don't think its worth messing with disassembling the chrome ones..

Just my $.02

Great info, now I need to find someone to wrap my. Do you know how long the vinyl will last, especially the driver's door.

Re: Chrome door handles

Does the vinyl cause any issue with keyless entry / comfort access / touch to lock / whatever jeep calls it?

Well today I was able to take off the chrome part of the door handle without having to take my whole door apart. I was right. Remove the star bit screw. Using a trim stick you need to pry both top and bottom on the end of the door handle. Once both the top and bottom disengage use the trim stick to get in between the chrome piece and the black textured piece and gently run it towards the front of the handle to break the black adhesive holding the chrome piece to the rest of the handle. The only bad part is you can not take off the other smaller chrome trim piece. But doing this it may make it more easier to vinyl wrap your handles. The bigger ones you can do off the truck and the smaller ones you can do on the truck.
