Chrome grill insert

I have a new 2015 Limited and decided to do the chrome grill inserts. While looking for the parts I have come across (on EBAY) the plastic Chinese version and the OEM version for three times the price. Are they both plastic, are they the same? I have reviewed previous posts and cannot find that answer.

Thanks for your help!

Mark

Re: Chrome grill insert

I don't know the quality of those knockoffs, but my research indicates the OEM to be plastic. I saw those too and was curious as to the compared quality of both. I'm in the same boat as you, Limited and considering a replacement of the grill inserts to get the honeycomb but am on the fence between black or faux chrome.

Re: Chrome grill insert

Got a link?

The OEM parts are likely made in China anyways, so... The grill rings are made in China, so I'd reckon the inserts would be to. If it's being shipped from China it can get expensive or take a while

Re: Chrome grill insert

Every time I think I want the chrome inserts I rethink it and decided the black might look better due to matching the lower section with the black honeycomb.

Re: Chrome grill insert

The OEM "chrome" grill inserts are just plastic. I also have a Limited and bought a set from a member here (check the for sale section) for about the same price as the Chinese knockoffs.

Re: Chrome grill insert

I have a 2014 Summit that comes with the chrome inserts. I would consider trading. If anyone here is interested shoot me a PM and we can discuss.
P.S. and yes they are plastic.

Re: Chrome grill insert

Mark I'm in the same boat as you. I keep rethinking the chrome vs. black to match the black honeycomb on the front lower section. I've seen some photos of the chrome and it looks good but I also like the contrast of the black against my Billet Silver paint. I'm right in your neck of the woods BTW.

Re: Chrome grill insert

I ordered the black inserts yesterday, I think the contrast will be perfect with the rest of the vehicle. I do have the chrome bug shield and decided that would be enough chrome.

Re: Chrome grill insert

Take some before/after photos if you can, I for one, would love to see the difference. Also interested in where you ordered from and hear experiences of installation. If you'd prefer, feel free to send me a PM.

Re: Chrome grill insert

I added the Mopar chrome Overland mesh to my 2014 Limited GC. They are pretty flimsy plastic. But they were inexpensive ($30?) and I gets lots of compliments, which I was surprised people noticed. I just did it because I liked it better myself but didn't expect others to even tell the difference. TWO WORDS OF WARNING: they are a bear to keep shiny/clean. All those little holes have to be wiped individually maybe every second or third car wash or they just look cloudy/lose their shine and then what's the point. I use my pinky finger in a microfiber cloth and some detailing spray. I do it when no one is around to see me because I don't want to look like I am too nuts. SECOND: the proper way to install them is to REMOVE the front bumper. I did not know this when I bought them. I read online of people doing it without removing the bumper but honestly I don't see any way how. There's no room to get to it from above or below unless you have the thinnest and longest forearms ever. I asked my dealer to do it and they charged $100 labor which I thought was fair for the work involved.

The Overland has black mesh inserts, maybe you meant the Summit inserts? Also, that's a great price if they are OEM. The chrome Summit inserts are actually pretty expensive.

Re: Chrome grill insert

Ah, yes, you are correct thank you! They were the Summit chrome inserts. My sister in law has an Overland and she has the same mesh design but black.....I regret I cannot remember who I ordered them from but they were in Mopar packaging. I think the chrome Mopar inserts for the '11-'13 models are much more expensive. Maybe they are metal? Anyway when I was looking online I found a lot of variation in Mopar accessory pricing....
