Clear Bra vs Dr. ColorChip

I've read lots of good reviews of the 3M Clear Bra in other threads here and I'm probably going to get it installed. It costs $600 installed in my area.

This Dr. ColorChip kit looks like it does a great job too and part of me is thinking why don't I just spend $39 and do a little touch up every spring? www.drcolorchip.com

Thoughts?

Re: Clear Bra vs Dr. ColorChip

Do you want your vehicle to look like its been touched up, or clear bra'd. Thats a decision only you can make. The fillers dont work as good as it looks, especially if your not a body specialist, it doesn't make it completely flat/invisible. The clear bra does a great job protecting exposed frontal areas. Some rock chips if big enough can take you down to bare metal, dr colorchip isn't going to fix that. You also need to prime first if you take it down to bare metal on a chip. Its an investment but I think worth it for a clear bra. I have one. Then again, you may not scratch up your vehicle. If you live an an area that gets sanded/salted in the winter, drive lots of highway, your going to look like it was sandblasted after a couple of years without one.

Hey J13ntv
I too live on LI and was wondering if you can recommend a shop for the clear bra install. Also what would a ballpark figure be? Thanks!

Re: Clear Bra vs Dr. ColorChip

I inquired about the clear bra's with a good buddy of mine one who installs them on many vehicles for a couple of years now. He told me he is still on the fence about them. They do a good job for what they are intended for but the abuse they take you will have to continue to replace them at least every year or every other year depending on your driving habits if your lucky every 3 years. And at $600 dollars an install it's not what I was looking to spend every year or other year. I took the option of buying a Jeep Bra for $170 and just plan ahead for anytime I will be traveling a lot on the highway or interstate put the bra on, only takes about 10-15 min. I have 13,000+ miles on mine so far and my front end still looks good! Plus I can take it off and put it on whenever I please, you cannot do this with a clear bra. But clear bra's when new and in good shape look great and keep your front end protected, it's just when they start taking the abuse and start looking crappy you have to do something about it. So it's really just preference and how much you wanna spend out of your pocket to keep your front end looking good.

Re: Clear Bra vs Dr. ColorChip

Really? Replace every three years or so? That's hogwash. I've had clear bra materials on for years (Ram since '05, 330I since '04, and 325xiT since '03, and GC (Nano) since '11) and they work and look great. And here in Colorado, they put rocks on the roads when they get snowy & icy. I've yet to replace any of mine. Some of the best protection $ you can spend, IMHO. Bruce

Re: Clear Bra vs Dr. ColorChip

So Bruce are you saying the vehicles that have had them on for years looks exactly the same as when they were installed and still can hardly tell they are there? I don't have any experience with them and was just going off what my buddy that installs them was telling me, which made sense to me that the clear bra takes the abuse that your front end would be taking if it wasn't there, like bugs and rocks etc. so eventually they will start looking like crap after time and like I said it does depend on your driving habits, if you drive 10-15K miles a year then it probably will last more than 3 years. I'm not knocking clear bra's at all, I like them just rather spend $170 on regular bra compared to $600 and maybe more if it has to be reinstalled again in 2,3,4 years from now because I do put a lot of miles on my vehicles to keep it looking like new.

Re: Clear Bra vs Dr. ColorChip

In other threads there have been reports that the place where chips are worst is the flared lower-front outside of the rear wheel wells. Slap some Mylar protection there and on the hood lip, and presumably that would cover the vulnerable areas.

I don't know of any bra manufacturers offering such a configuration, though, so it would probably have to be a custom fit.

Re: Clear Bra vs Dr. ColorChip

No, you can see them, especially on the older vehicles that have 3M film. They do take abuse, and will show some pock marks if hit hard enough, but that is very rare. The clear bras are not perfect, but in my environment, they are the best protection I've found, especially on cars with low hood heights in a state full of 4x4 pickups that constantly throw rocks at you. The nano material that I put on the '11 GC is the least noticeable, and has a lifetime warranty. http://www.nanofusionfilm.com/

Now, I do a "full-wrap," covering the lower door panels, front bumper, part of the hood, and mirrors. Works really well, and cuts down on wax time. Bruce

The installer told me to wax my clear bra with the same wax that was going on the car; however, no polishing, claying, etc. (e.g. no Zymol HDCleanse). So, I'm assume that you are actually referring to the paint prep being cut down as you should be waxing the same amount of surface as always.

No, I don't wax the areas that have the film applied. Don't really see a need to. Bruce
