Dealer installed sealer?

I'm getting ready to buy a '17 Summit & noticed that on the lot most '16s have "Dealer installed sealer", a $600 to $800 extra. With modern paint & clearcoat is sealer even a recommended protection?? Thanks

Re: Dealer installed sealer?

That's called "pure dealer profit"...and something I would refuse to pay for.

Re: Dealer installed sealer?

I would tell them your not paying for it on the lot vehicle or order me a new one.

Re: Dealer installed sealer?

This is nothing more than a machine sealant anyone can apply to their paint. It's the dealer's way of sucking you into a stupid paint warranty that they count on you never reading the fine print of.

To be fair, not all profit. They probably had to pay some minimum wage lot tech a few pennies to schlop a nickels worth of crap on the vehicle. This of course presumes that they did anything at all besides just a decent wash job.

Try another dealer.

Walk away from that dealer. We have a 2014 GC Summit EcoDiesel and I only use Adam's Polishes products. Twice a year I do a full detail of the Jeep and apply Adam's Paint Sealent, Glaze, and Wax after it gets a full wash, clay, and polish treatment. All this usually takes my a full day to do but it lasts and looks incredible when done. I use a Rupes Bigfoot 15" machine to apply everything.

Re: Dealer installed sealer?

Tell them to take it off the price, really not worth it. Another detailer in my area got ahold of one of the so called sealants. He did a test hood half with the dealers product, half with ceramic pro and after about week, the dealer product was about done. I am not a ceramic pro installer but do install a different brand and I would agree, the dealer stuff is mostly profit. Read the fine print about re-applications and such to keep the "warranty" and you'll see why no-one qualifies for warranty work. For what they are charging you might find a real coating.

Re: Dealer installed sealer?

Pretty much anything you see on that little extra sticker for "dealer installed" stuff is not necessary...it's a profit center. I noticed the other day that my local dealer's favorite add-on in this respect is glass etching. For three hundred bills. This kind of thing is one of the reasons I'm not inclined to "buy off the lot" and order instead since that restores control to me on my purchase. I state upfront...and generally in writing...that such add-ons are not acceptable and that I will not pay for them while I'm working for my deal. (Same goes for other requirements like "no dealer sticker" and "no drilling the bumper" for a front plate mount, etc.)

Re: Dealer installed sealer?

Yeah to what everyone else has said.

Most dealers have "dealer options" and it should be a separate sticker usually on the opposite side of the MFG sticker in the window.

You can tell the dealer to shove it regarding dealer options. Thing is you'll still likely get them as some the can't or don't want to take off. Just make sure to see the price breakdown of the vehicle so they don't try to slip it in.

If they do an you don't catch it while negotiating is should show up during finance price breakdown. Don't sign the papers until you know the cost of dealer options isn't listed.

Right, they have to pay someone and there's still material cost, but the profit margin is ridiculous. For example when I bought my '15, the dealer wanted $400 for the tint work. I called a couple of shops and they were at $200 for all the windows.
