Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

3M (and other) clear film will not stick to textured surfaces. It will only stick to smooth, painted surfaces.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

Another question for those who got the clear bra, specifically those who only got 1/3 of the hood and the front half of the fenders done: do you wish you got the full hood/front fenders done (due to the uncovered sections getting chips)?

Just trying to figure out what areas to get covered. Ideally I'd get the full hood, full front fenders, full bumper, and rocker panels covering the vulnerable part of the rear wheel well that juts out. But all that stuff really adds up. I'm wondering if just a full bumper, mirror caps, and partial hood + fender job would be sufficient, but I'd hate to get that and then wish I spent the extra dough on full coverage. A-pillars and the front part of the roof is also an option.

Maybe I'll run a poll on this too for those who don't have the clear bra installed.

Nope. I do not wish I got the rest covered.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

I don't regret not getting the whole hood. You can see the line, but you know where it is. Nobody else sees it, unless they stare at the hood critically for 60 seconds plus.

The line looks like its supposed to be that way, it doesn't look unnatural as the kit is cut to follow the lines of the car.

The cost to do the whole hood and fenders is HUGE. Fr me I paid $700 for the 1/3 hood and fenders, full bumper, headlights, and mirrors on the Lexus, it would have been $1,300 to do the full hood and fenders. That's a lot more to pay to avoid the line.

Best thing to do is to see some that have been done and decide.

This is the installer that did mine's gallery. In fact if you go to the last page, that silver Lexus is mine.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm not so much worried about the line (although it would be nice not to have it) as I am rocks missing the covered area and still giving me chips.

Did you get the bikini cut for the hood or just the regular cut (straight line)?

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

It's the bikini cut, you always want the bikini cut. Any laser cut kit, which most installs are unless they're real high end (or full hood and fenders which is why they are so much more, it's custom with no kit) will be bikini cut.

I would not be worried about high chips, especially on the Jeep. The hood is so high...

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

I got 2 rock chips past my clear bra on my hood, but was able to fix them with Mopar Touch Up paint w/ paint thinner, letting it dry, repeating, and then Mopar Clear Coat touch up w/ paint thinner. The touch up work I did just makes it look like a tiny imperfection and it looks like the factory did it. It's only noticeable if you're looking for it too. So it worked well in my opinion, and I'm picky about the looks of my Jeep. If you got the entire hood covered it would look like the hood has orange peel.

Any chance you could show a photo of what the touchup looks like? If not, no big deal, but I'm kinda curious.

Regarding the orange peel, from what I've read so far, apparently some PPF's have more orange peel than others. 3M seems to be notorious for it, while XPEL Ultimate, Avery Nano-Fusion, and some others apparently don't have it, or at least not nearly to the same degree.

The other thing about the full hood is there's more money at stake if the installer does a crappy job.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

Mine is 3M Ventureshield and the peel matches the rest of the paint. The VentureShield is smoother than the 3M Scotchguard.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

I have Durashield. It's not a 3M product. I'll see if I can get you those pictures. I only have a poor quality cell phone camera, and it takes some effort to get pictures transferred from it to my computer, but I'll give it a shot.

Edit: I took pictures but none show the touch ups and I can't even get the line of the clear bra to show up.
