Do I need the clear bra or no?

I.e. Is the vehicle high enough off the ground that in practice we don't need one?

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

No vehicle is too high that it wont get road rash or rocks/sand/gravel flung at it from time to time. If you want the front of your car to stay rash free then I would highly recommend one.
For example I am the second owner of my 2007 Acura TL Type S. It never had a clear bra installed and the front end looks like it has white speckles all over it from normal rash. I can only imagine if the car had a clear bra installed since new the front bumper/fenders/hood would still look brand new. Oh well, the next new car I get will without a doubt have a clear bra installed asap.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

To me, the Clear Bra itself looks ugly after a few months due to discoloration and nicks from road debris. You point of the JGC being high off the gound, thus limiting rock chips and damage from debris, is very valid.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

My theory is this. If you live in the snow belt do it.You can always redo the clear bra. When you have to get your vehicle repainted it's never the same and will cost you a fortune.

Discoloration? Not with 3M film, and better to have a replaceable bra get nicked than to have a paint job or rusty pits.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

I've got the 3m clear bra and luv it. Judging by the number of marks on the bra and stone chips in the unprotected areas, I'm a believer in having as much chip protection as possible.

If you drive your Jeep off-road, or on the highway, you're going to get a lot of stone chips.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

I used it on the hood, but messed up the piece for the front bumper. The fit was very poor for both the hood and bumper. The company I used, Invisible Mask, promised a replacement at cost but conveniently NEVER answered their phone and only replied to 1 of about 5 of my emails. In the email they agreed to send a replacement but then it never came and I never heard from them again after another round of attempted calls and emails.

After a year without the clear bra I wish I had it... noticiable rock chips on the bumper. Some rock chipping has been so bad that its actually pitted the clear bra on the hood... glad I have it even though the fittment is poor - it does not cover the full hood leaving about an inch on both fender sides.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

Yes, I would not go without it. As others state, get 3M or similar quality and it should last for ownership.

Several local Porsche/Audi dealers in Colorado put it on all of their vehicles, pre-sale.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

It's worth remembering that, not all that far back, the EPA in its infinite wisdom decided that various solvents used in paints, varnishes and nail polishes were harmful to air quality. The result is that today's environmentally correct paints, whether for houses or vehicles, wear faster and chip more easily than before.

Thus begat paint film covering.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

now i am thinking about getting this. i read online that you can basically apply it almost anywhere. where are the main areas i would want to apply this? obviously, i want to apply to only the most problem prone areas and not places that won't really need it. i'm going to have mud flaps too.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

I have had 3M Clear Bra products on at least 5 vehicles and had no problems/discoloration whatsoever.

Recently I put Xpel Ultimate film wrapped on my front bumper, front hood, rocker panels, A pillars and mirror caps. This film is warrantied and self healing, as long as you have a good installer you should be good to go.

The films prevent a lot of damage in the long run, are easily replaceable or removeable also. It helps resale value quite a bit.

Re: Do I need the clear bra or no?

What I have:

Brand: Durashield. It's laser cut including around where the JEEP emblem is on the front.

Location: Front of hood about 12-18 inches up. Front of each fender. Front bumper. Headlights. Fog Lights. Under all door handles.

Price: $550. There's a warranty, but I can't remember how many years it's warrantied for. I'm thinking either 3 or 5 years. I'd have to look it up.

Location Wish list (to be added hopefully at some point in the future): A-pillars. Above windshield.

You don't need to cover chrome.
