Exterior Door Lock Button: multiple presses to lock doors?

My 2014 JGC Overland has the exterior door lock buttons on the front doors. I don't remember if that is an option on some trim levels or if it's standard for all, but that isn't my question.

My question is, why does it sometimes take one press to lock the doors, sometimes it's two presses, and sometimes it's four presses. Yes, four. Rarely if ever has it been three presses.

Every time, I am standing outside the driver's door with the remote key in my pocket and within 5 feet of the driver's door handle.

It is truly annoying. Any ideas? Here's what the owner's manual says:

Quote:
To Lock The Vehicle’s Doors And Liftgate

With one of the vehicle’s Passive Entry RKE transmitters within 5 ft (1.5 m) of the driver or passenger front door handles, press the door handle LOCK button to lock all four doors.
Thanks in advance!

The same thing happens with my brothers key, but it's usually when the key is cold.
Maybe talk to your dealership they can possibly fix it through your warranty.

Re: Exterior Door Lock Button: multiple presses to lock doors?

I have had the same problem in my 2012 GC and I pulled the transponder apart & cleaned the dirt & fluff out of it and now no problems with the door.
Hope your problem is solved as easily as mine was.
Regards, John

Re: Exterior Door Lock Button: multiple presses to lock doors?

I noticed something similar once when there was ice on the handles this past winter. Once I hit lock, it locked and horn sounded. Split second later, saw the mirrors double pulse and doors unlocked. It never happened a second time. Haven't had your issue though.

Make sure to remove your hand from the inside of the handle when pressing it, (the sensor believes you are trying to unlock it and lock it at the same time) I made the same mistake when I first got mine. Hope this helps

Re: Exterior Door Lock Button: multiple presses to lock doors?

I had this issue with my early build (3/2013). I was never able to figure why it did that.

While I did have this issue, my early build never had the '4 click' on the remote to open the truck, issue.

My 11/13 build works great with the door handle button, but always takes for clicks to open the trunk....go figure

Re: Exterior Door Lock Button: multiple presses to lock doors?

Thank you, echo7tango, for speaking up. I have the same issue, and it happens regardless of the weather conditions. My JGC Ltd was built in 5/13. I've noticed that it sometimes locks on 1 click, but more often it requires more than 1 click. However, I've never actually counted clicks, but I do know it often takes several presses. And I know not to place my hand inside the handle.

Interestingly enough, I never have had an issue when I use the button on the passenger side door to lock the vehicle. So far, I've been able to lock it every time with one click. Thus, I thought the button on my driver door might just be wonky.

It's not been a great concern for me, and so I've never brought it up with the dealer. So I'd be interested in hearing if your service guys have given any feedback on the issue.

I'm definitely not doing that, so that's not the problem. My hand is completely outside of the handle, pressing the button.

Just tonight, arriving home, it took four presses. I live in the SF Bay Area so weather is not a problem, it's not the cause. It's rained exactly once since I bought my car on 22 March. Other than that it has been sunny and warm.

I've never tried the passenger door, but will start to. I'm going to start using the other remote, too, in case there's a symptom difference with this software bug. I'm guessing it's a SW bug, but awesome says it might be dirt in the transponder.

I'm definitely going to mention this at the dealer. I will want them to get this right. I'm a little leery of automated lock/unlock systems that might be buggy.

Re: Exterior Door Lock Button: multiple presses to lock doors?

Mine worked perfectly for the first few months, but lately it will take three or four presses on the driver door button to lock it. It recognizes that the button is being pressed, but keeps wanting to unlock it as if my hand is wrapped around the door handle.

Passenger door doesn't have this issue...maybe I have already worn out the drivers' button...sigh.

Well, guys and gals, it's been a couple of days since my OP and I've been looking at this more carefully. I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but...

Yes, Willden1, you were right after all! I was inadvertantly putting some of my fingers around the door handle! AAARGH!!!!

I feel a little dumb.

For a couple of days now I've kept my hand away from the handle, and sure enough the doors lock on the first press, the first time and every time.

It turned out to be use error.
