The two are intrinsically related...at least when you look at it from the bigger picture and not from individual preferences by individual enthusiasts. Overall, the folks that go for the Summit are people like me: primarily highway drivers who want luxury but also have a desire or need for the towing and occasional light-off-road capability that the JGC brings. That's the market they are addressing with this trim level. I go for bells and whistles and could care less about rugged tires and rock crawling capability. The major reason I'm in the JGC rather than buying another Highlander Hybrid Limited is my need to tow a small horse trailer. That said...I like my Summit even better than the Highlander, despite the change in fuel consumption. (I do get good relative mileage with the Jeep because I'm not a heavy foot)

Now I do find it hard to believe that the vast majority of folks for "this market" only like black or dark brown interiors...

I don't disagree that few Summit and Overland buyers alike are likely to go "off road". But, this said, what could it hurt to offer Summit buyers the same $295 choice of switching to 18" wheels & adding skidplates, not to mention an interior choice beyond "drab" and dark AND drab"?

Which is, at best, abysmally stupid.

Is it possible the creative folks at Jeep never heard of a Range Rover?
Or a Texas rancher truck?

I agree it was a stupid marketing Idea to separate the summit and overland into to models.

Just because I like to take my jeep off the black top, I can't get the few cool extras? They probably could have got me for a few more shekel's if it was a luxury package or something.

X2! I would love to have the approach / departure angles, tow hooks, skid plates, round exaust, "less" chrome of the Overland with ORA2, but also get the high end speaker system, front park sensors, and headlamp washers of the Overland. Of course I actually would prefer an option of all of the above with the black plastic front and rear fascias and fender skirts. But of course Chrysler won't offer that.

Please don't misunderstand me...I'm not saying Jeep is doing the right thing...I'm just suggesting what they appear to have done with the MY14 Summit differentiation.

Re: Frustrated with Summit color options

In the words of a great contemporary poet, You can't always get what you want, but if you try some times. you'll get what you need.

Life is a series of compromises, why should this be any different. I love my overland, after going though a tough patch with the wife being out of work, I feel blessed to have it.

I wish you were on the design and decision making team for Jeep.

Also, what is the deal with the chrome around the taillights? Jeep just copied GMC Acadia, and it's not a good look.

Re: Frustrated with Summit color options

Not trying to be OT, but I really wished they offered the HK sound system in the overland. That is a huge bummer and deal killer for me. I know its been said before so I'm sorry to be beating a dead horse.

(some of you will appreciate the unicorn reference)

Me too! But that might feed my Jeep addiction too much. Three Jeeps right now, would love a few more but soon the HOA would be getting mad because I'd be out of parking... as we already own more vehicles than our three car garage can hold.

Besides they probably would want me to move to some place like Detroit, and not from my place in Arizona or someplace I would want to be like San Diego or Alaska.

Re: Frustrated with Summit color options

I actually called Jeep today & told them about the lack of parking sensors on the Overland and poor color choices in the Summit.

Much to my surprise, the Rep said she's heard this before and calls/letters do matter in changing future products.
