Has anyone noticed that while the Grand Cherokees are getting bigger, the cargo areas of the newer GCs is getting smaller? My 2003 GC would carry several large plastic garbage cans to the recycling center with no hassle. Then they wouldn't fit in the 2005 GC, with a more sloping roofline, so had to fold the seats down and push them further back. Then in the 2012 WK2, a plywood platform, that I built for a special purpose in the 2005, doesn't fit, so I will have to saw 1-2 inches off of the width when I use it next. What gives with this?
And weighs a LOT more with less HP out of their V6.
My neighbor has one and when I told him what my GC weighed and what the V6 has for hp/torque, he was not a 'happy camper'.
VW has become too over-priced, under-powered, and un-reliable (in my humble opinion).
Interesting to speculate about, Isto', but I really do think it's mostly about the safety standards and styling. Consumer demand for quieter vehicles probably weighs in on this, too. The rumored Grand Wagoneer will certainly be longer to better accommodate the extra seat row and therefore, likely have a little more cargo space, but it may not be wider. I'd almost guess it will very much parallel whatever the look and feel of the then-current JGC will be. (or vice versa)
I agree ... The cargo area is smaller. Wish you could adjust 2nd row seats just like in Mazda. You can than have either more cargo room or more leg room for passengers.
Also the problem is the sloping hatch. Another issue is lack of flipper glass. That is a killer for me. With flipper you can just stuff things in after you close the hatch.
I attached an image for this. Can someone that owns a 2014 Grand Cherokee tell me the width (orange) and depth (blue) for the cargo area. Without going to the dealer I can't deem to find this info.
What would the blue dimension be with the second row seat down? In other words, how large of a piece of plywood could you lay flat with the hatch closed. I am thinking of getting an inflatable or foam bed for those one-nights that you do not want to setup a tent.
Your problem with the size was exactly what I found between the 2001 I had and the 2012. In some ways many cars appear to have as much space as the current GC, just not in height.
