Ugh don't say that. I have to get my inspection done and I was going to do it this Saturday, because it expires in July now I'm afraid they won't pass me because of this.

Ok, you are heading down a dicey path. You are being noble and trying to figure out a way to help the owner avoid a claim. Fair enough, sometimes works out for both sides. Can very easily get messy. The only clean way to pursue this resolution is to agree on an amount to fully settle the situation. This number will be tough to get agreement on as it won't be small. If you agree then he gives YOU the money and you are then free to use it as you see fit.

The path you are suggesting is the dicey one. DO NOT go down the path of getting your body shop quote and then he "agrees" to either pay the bill or reimburse you. Uh, nice try fella! You stand have him stiff the body shop and now you have to pay the body shop to get your car.

Get clean cash up front or file the claim with his insurance.

It's the busted marker light they would likely tag you on, not the slight gap with wheel well or minor body damage so long as they deem it safe.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to get the police report which I'm hoping I can get saturday afternoon and then file/contact with his insurance.

Tomorrow after work I think I'm going to take a trip to my body shop and see what they think about this.

Wise move. 1st time is wrong time to make a big $ mistake. Good luck.

Summithemi is giving you good advice. Take it. Also by going the insurance route they will usually guarantee the work for life, so if issues pop up sometime down the road your not left holding the bag.

Well just an update I spoke to my bodyshop they told me to get the police report which should be available tomorrow and drop off the jeep along with it and they would contact the other party's insurance company.

After looking at it with the bodyshop, there looks to be something metal behind where the reflector used to be that is bent also

Yep, that's likely the structural bumper I was referring to.

Re: Got hit from behind...need help with identifying parts

Waiting 2 days beats entering into a shady agreement.
I'd let your insurance carrier know you had an accident and will provide vehicle owner's info as soon as you get the police report.

Who was driving doesn't matter, the vehicle owner is responsible for letting them drive, and their insurance company is on the hook--unless they are uninsured in which case your company will give you the rest of the news.

I wouldn't even think for a nanosecond about letting them touch your vehicle.

Agreed. They also may get a bit testy if you DON'T tell them about the accident.
Just because you report it doesn't mean it was your fault...

Agreed. And if you do settle in advance, please speak to a lawyer about making sure you get a signed contract that THEY won't come after you later for money---that they hold you completely blameless and forego any future claims.

Otherwise, you could end up in bankruptcy court.
