Thumbs up Help. Please identify part. Running Boards 2012 WK2

Hey everyone!

I need help in identifying the part on top of the bracket of the running boards in the attached picture. is the silver piece. It seems it is the bolt that attaches the bracket to the jgc. I need that confirmed. I am buying a set that is missing that part.

I NEED to know, can the running boards still be installed without those or installed by using a different bolt from, say, Home Depot?

Thanks for all your help

Re: Help. Please identify part. Running Boards 2012 WK2

Not sure what the part number is, but I'm sure any parts dept will have it. Its a pretty standard bolt for most running boards. Although they don't sell them at Home Depot, all you need is a bolt, and a large enough washer at the end.

Re: Help. Please identify part. Running Boards 2012 WK2

Thanks, that part number is 68088053AB
The kit would include nuts, bolts, and rivets. They said that it would not include the brackets as those are listed individually so the kit would just include odds and ends like washers, etc. The list price for that kit is $59.

thx for your reply.

Re: Help. Please identify part. Running Boards 2012 WK2

Seems EXTREMELY expensive for just nuts and bolts! Home Depot would have the equivalent for a few dollars.

That plate with bolt goes inside of the Sill were the rubbers are and then it forms part of the bolt up kit. If you have two out of the 3 u could get away with it on one side. If you go onto the just for jeeps website it has installation instructions for jeep genuine sidesteps. I got mine instructions from their as I brought mine second hand.

Re: Help. Please identify part. Running Boards 2012 WK2

The other advice is that all the brackets are label left or right, front middle or rear don't mix them up or it doesn't work.

Thanks every one. Fortunately, all bolts were included. So no purchasing the kit (at $90 total for both sides). Will look for labels (left/right front/back).

The LR MR etc are stamped on the bracket.

Re: Help. Please identify part. Running Boards 2012 WK2

Well, I didn't see the stamping. But i believe you since the tube is not falling in place for the third bolt. Will have to take down again. Its a pia to attach the bracket's third bolt (the one i asked for help identifying).

Re: Help. Please identify part. Running Boards 2012 WK2

Look closely...should be stamped on the inside part of each bracket. I think it was R, M, F. They all look the same size from appearance but they differ by a cm of two. If you don't get front, middle and rear brackets right the steps will never line up right.

Re: Help. Please identify part. Running Boards 2012 WK2

Hutch, MAC,

Thanks for your comments. You were both right, there are stamped letters on the bracket. Located on the underside of the bracket, right next to the hole for the "third" bolt, which is the L shaped specialty bolt.

What I learned:
1) Find the stamped letter to properly place the brackets.
2) the L-shaped bolt has a triangle in the tip of the bolt to indicate the direction is should face before tightening. USE A FINE POINT sharpie pen, to identify the apex of the triangle. It would make it easy to identify the direction the bolt should be placed before tightening.
3) you need a 13mm deep socket, 2 inch extension and wrench to tighten the L-shaped bolts nuts.
4) a trip to home depot to get hardware to replace the L-shaped bolt is a waste of time. These bolts are very specific to this application and although you may find something that will do the job, installation is the key. You need to place the nut on the bolt without placing your hand on the top of the bolt (the heavier OEM bolt helps getting this done), the base of the L-shaped bolt is squared, to reduce rotation of the bolt when tightening, and so much more. That and that it was a PIA to just get the nut attached, I wouldn't want to do it without the right hardware.
5) there are 5 rubber "grommets" under each side of the cherokee, remove only 1, 3, and 5 (front to back). Locate the holes on the ridge where the bracket gets bolt to, to identify which are the grommets to remove.
6) Total time to install, about 15 minutes per bracket (5 minutes for the two small bolts, and about 10 just for the L-shaped bolt).. so roughly 1:30 HOURS, plus 10 minutes for the running boards (use 10mm sockets for those)
7) L-shaped bolts are the most important bolts as they are the one that hold all the weight placed on the running boards.

Thanks all.
