For a couple of dollars I thought I'd see how these go

Re: Here it is. Custom interior ambient footwell LED lighting. Pics inside!

I did order both 5mm and 3 mm. The 3mm seemed to match the brightness of the lighting in the door. The 5 mm were considerbly brighter. Though I have not actually installed them. I just did a mock up test. I am planning on using the 3mm once the weather warm up.

Re: Here it is. Custom interior ambient footwell LED lighting. Pics inside!

I finished my install and will post pictures within the next couple of days. I used 4- 3MM LEDs in the front and 2 in the back. I wired everything up with two 560ohm transistors (one front and one rear) I used a dremel one the leds which I would never have thought of but is an absolutely crucial step to get this project to look right (thanks JTS). I placed the LEDs in the bezels but they do not protrude below the felt covers so they can not be seen at any angle and still provide the perfect amount of light.

One poster mentioned he was disappointing in the amount of light and that is why I used 2 leds, one led would have been too dim in my opinion unless it was sticking below the felt cover.

Anyhow, in the end this was an awesome project and I thank all of the posters to help me get this done, it was my first time soldering, tearing into my jeep, and installing a custom mod! The project is great and I would have never though of doing it without jeepgarage.org and the awesome members!

Pics coming soon

I wish I could have gotten these, if you use them just make sure you dremel the tips and sides of them to properly diffuse the light as direct by JTS.

I used 2 3mm leds and they provide about 90% of the light output I was hoping for.

Everclearcrans...can you post the pics? I took the dremel to the top but am still not satisified with the light output. I may have gone with too thick of a gauge wire? I took a dremel to them and it is a little better, but with what I see, nothing compared to what the pictures are on here.

Re: Here it is. Custom interior ambient footwell LED lighting. Pics inside!

This was a great mod, thanks to the OP and all others who gave some great advice. I completed it for mine this past weekend. Very easy to do. I made the "wire harness" in advance using 16Ga wire (way too thick but I already had it on hand.) I had one + and one - lead that I spliced into the cupholder light wires. The - lead was soldered to 4 feeds...one for each light. The + lead was soldered to two feeds...one for the front and one for the back...this is where I placed the two resisitors. From there, it splits in two again for front left/right and rear left/right (so each resistor feeds two bulbs). I got my resistors and lights from superbrightleds.com. RL3-A4018 Aqua 3mm bulbs and CF1/4C561J: 560 OHM resistors. Also got a couple BM-3 mounting bezels for the front two lights. I put the front lights where everyone else has been putting theirs. The rear ones were attached to the flat section of the bar under the front seats and held in place with zip ties. justforjeeps has a nice instruction manual for the OEM kit that shows you where to run wires, how to pull things apart, etc. Also, the tip on taking a dremel to the bulbs to diffuse light was great. In my opinion, one bulb for each seat was enough, and the color is spot-on. Before I started this project my wife said "this is a waste of your time and money" then she saw the results and said "hey this looks great and is actually useful....how much did this cost? $15? AWESOME!" To make myself look like even more of a hero, I showed her the price of the OEM kit. So happy wife = happy life.

Re: Here it is. Custom interior ambient footwell LED lighting. Pics inside!

I finally got mine done this weekend. I had tried it once before, but didn't realize that I needed a 560ohm resistor so I didn't bow them up, which I did the first time. Now with resitors installed they look "Great". I'm thinking about adding 2 to the rear seats also, as soon as I order more LEDs.

Re: Here it is. Custom interior ambient footwell LED lighting. Pics inside!

Reviving an old thread I know. The OP did a FANTASTIC job of creating that ambient lighting in the footwell..but you know you can buy colored LED T-15 bulbs that plug right into the DOMED light that already exists? That's what I did. $5 and looks awesome. Do they stay on while driving...no? But I guess that is what the OP wanted.

Great job on the install and the project, but if you want colored LED's in the footwell, just pop that cap off and install these like I did: Amazon.com: 4x 194 168 5-smd Blue High Power LED Car Lights Bulb By Zone Tech: Automotive

Still...very cool what the OP did.
