Re: HID fog lights melting

Dumb question, but regarding the size of the stock bulb to the aftermarket hid bulb, is there any difference in overall length? What area of the housing are you seeing the damage?

Re: HID fog lights melting

from what i have been told...HID's generate less heat than halogen. BUT.....the WK guys have had the same problems with their foglamps lenses cracking, melting etc. just from halogen bulbs. I know I went thru like 3 sets before I found my current lamps on ebay. They aare perfect after 2 years with Xenondepot 4300K HID's.

Re: HID fog lights melting

^^^^ I have the same kit from Xenondepot. Had it in the WK1 and now on the WK2 with no issues.

Re: HID fog lights melting

My only guess is that the HID kit he is using is of an inferior brand and is actually generating more heat by using more electricity than it states it uses. So in actuality it should use 35w but maybe it's over-driving itself due to the ballast you have. It could use an inferior controller chip (if it's a digital ballast) and is failing to regulate it properly.

The color temp has nothing to do with heat! The 8k kit produces the same amount of heat as the 4k or 5 k. HID bulbs are a problem in small spaces as there is not much room for the heat to dissipate. The only thing that can help is to reduce the wattage. For fog lights go with 35 watts or less.

Is that because the HID bulb is longer then the stock bulb so the light is closer to the lens?

Re: HID fog lights melting

In all my cases going from halogen to HID, The HID's are longer than the stock bulbs. Could be my cases. They were 9007
