Talking HID High Beams - Secondary Bulb or just a lid.

Hi everyone,

First off... I'm new to this blog and I apologize if I didn't write this the in the right place.

My question is about the HID high-beams. I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Overland. As far as I know, the overland doesn't come with Bi-Xenon; so let's assume I don't have it. I've been thinking about changing the headlight bulb to a more cooler color temp. I've been looking at the bulbs but then I thought... "What about the High-beams ?". I was trying to figure out where was the light from the high-beams coming from and I realized it comes from the same projector as the low-beams. However I noticed that when I activate the High-beam, I hear some mechanical noise go off and what appears to be a "lid" that moves up as to let more light get through the projector.

So my question is.. does the Jeep Grand Cherokee with Xenon HID (not Bi-Xenon) has a secondary high-beam xenon bulb? or am I right about the "lid" theory. Either way if someone knows how it works I would greatly appreciate it!

Your theory is correct, although they call it a shutter in the repair manuals. Only one bulb per headlamp.

There is one HID discharge lamp and a flap operated by a solenoid that creates a shadow. There's also a self leveling system.

Thank you RowanWuff. So based on what you know, would it be safe to say that I can install any Xenon D3S Bulb and the high-beam will work regardless since it's the shutter that makes this "effect"?

Yes, any D3S bulb will work fine with your headlamp.

If you have an Overland then yes you have bi-xenon HID headlights. It's easy enough to tell at night anyway, or just go out into the garage and flick your high beams once or twice. You'll hear the shutters and solenoids functioning, as well as the instant high beam/low beam transition.

FYI, the definition of bi-xenon is a single HID bulb with a flap/shutter/door, etc. for low and high beam. So, anytime you see the term bi-xenon, you know there is no separate high beam bulb.

So, as mentioned already, your overland DOES have bi-xenon HID headlights, with a "lid" that moves to allow more light for the high beam.

Thank you DriverDave. You are right!, I went back to the specifications of the overland and yes, according to the website, all overlands come with bi-xenon. I think I misread it when I had originally looked at the "adaptive bi-xenon" not being available on it.

All in all, what I was thinking on doing was to replace the xenon bulb with a D3S LED. However with the whole bi-xenon shutter I can only wonder if this is even possible. Do you have any idea about this? Also, is the shutter part of the xenon bulb? or is it part of the headlight structure?

Thanks!

I think this answers my question....

However I'm still not sure about whether the shutter mechanism is built in to the bulb (I doubt it) but I'll appreciate any opinions. If say; I take the bulb out but the shutter "stays" within the headlight housing then it may be possible to insert a D3S Led replacement as long as is not longer/shorter than what the shutter casing allows.

I honestly don't think it would be worth the trouble to replace a well designed factory HID with an aftermarket LED. I've never even heard of anyone ever doing that. I doubt you'll be able to get the same full, even light coverage and smooth cutoff with the LED. Just my opinion, of course.

No, the shutter is a completely different component and not part of the bulb. The shutter is part of the projector unit. The bulb simply gets mounted into the projector and is separate from all that. I didn't even know they make HID bulb LED replacements.
BTW I agree with driver Dave. I cannot imagine any aftermarket LED bulb being as good as a very high quality HID bulb system.

Well, yeah... granted they wouldn't have a wide range as the Xenon however as far as looks go... that Ice White with a hint of purple halo is tempting!

I was looking into something like these D3S:

or even this:

My only concern will be how the shutter works. The diodes on these "bulbs" are on opossite sides and only on 2 of those sides. The way the shutter works, it looks like I won't het much of a High-beam unless the "bulb" was volumetric.
