How to Plastidip all of the exterior chrome

So I've had a few members asking me how exactly I plastidipped all the chrome and didn't see a 'how to' anywhere on JG yet (though I might not have looked that hard). Anyway here is the video I followed, very well explained: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6BXz0Cw_GQ

It took me about 5-6 cans to do the front grill, rear hatch piece, window trim, and the side trim pieces (bought the plastidip at Lowes). I chose not to do the roof rack and emblems just out of preference. For the front grill and rear hatch piece, I just popped those out and sprayed them on some newspaper in my garage (both pieces are held in by plastic clips that are fairly easy to pop out with a screwdriver or something similar, and it's easier if you have two people to pop out the front piece). The window trim and side trim pieces I just masked off with painters tape and newspaper. I did 4 layers of plastidip on everything. When you are all done and it has all dried, you can wipe off the excess over spray that got on the jeep's paint with a microfiber towel, but be careful, I was a bit hasty and nicked the trim with the towel which ended up causing some very small flakes of the plastidip to come off on the window trim, it wasn't bad enough for me to redo the whole side but just be careful. Also I was told by my brother not to drive through automatic car washes, he had some of the plastidip come off on his, just wash it yourself at a self wash place.

FYI, I highly recommend you buy one of these spray can handles: Can-Gun1 2012 Premium Can Tool Aerosol Spray - Spray Paints - Amazon.com I did the front and rear pieces without this and by the end my last coat was pretty inconsistent due to my fingers being so worn out and barely able to press the spray button.

Posted some pictures of the process below (sorry didn't take any while doing the front and rear pieces).

Be sure to leave a good 1/2 to 1 inch gap between the trim and masking tape, this is vital:

What rims tires are you running there?

Great look! I'm definitely going to do mine. Would the plastidip hold up if I were to do my chrome mopar nerd bars? I hardly ever actually step on them but they still take a beating. I've heard people on JG plastidipping their rims too though...thoughts?

Thanks man, yea my roommate plastidipped the rims on his Miata and they held up fine, I'd guess it should hold up for the mopar bars but I just don't know, I googled it and looks like plenty of other folks have tried it on their nerf bars. Worst case you lose $20 and a few hours of work plus you could always just peel it off if it starts to chip too much

look AMAZING good job!!!! im about to plasti dip my chrome window trim, just quick question, did you cover windows all the way up to the chrome trim?? the word around is that you leave an inch or so to overspray on actual car so you can peel it off nice and easy but im confused about the actual window part of the car. thanks

Thanks! Do the same thing on the windows as you do on the paint and leave that inch or so gap on the edge. I was a little worried about the windows too when I did mine, but it will peel right off. The inch gap is vital to a clean edge when you peel it off

Yep inch gap on both sides of the trim. I'd recommend 3 coats minimum (two cans) and the spray handle I recommended in my earlier post (your finger will thank you). The thicker the coat, the easier it will be to peel off a clean edge and the longer the plastidip will last. A thicker coat also makes it easier to remove down the line if you ever want to pull it all off.

Hey guys!

My first post here. Just picked up my 2012 GC this last weekend. Im pumped!, so much i want to do to her! Was planning on plasti-dipping all the chrome this weekend, except for the window trim and roof rack. was going to vinyl those. only because in my previous car (G35 Sedan) The window trim started peeling real quick due to so much contact with hands etc. Plasti dipping is so much easier to do. Just wanted to ask how its been holding up around the windows for you guys?

You actually will not need a razor blade at all. If you follow the process and leave a nice 1 inch gap between the painters tape and the plastic edge, once it dries you will be able to just start peeling at the edge and it will leave a nice smooth perfect edge. Initially this confused me too because I didn't think there was any way just peeling it would leave a smooth edge, but somehow because of the material that plastidip is made out of, it always ends up leaving a very clean edge just by peeling!
