Re: I got my first door ding this weekend.

Same thing has happened to me many times and in even more remote locations. I just don't get it.

Glad your vehicle survived intact.

Looks like the old woman can't read either. She parks that long Toyota Camry in a compact space.

Re: I got my first door ding this weekend.

You guys are too funny. I know I shouldn't be laughing but I am. We JCK owners think alike when it comes to our pride and joys.

OP, I feel your pain. I got my first ding 6 weeks in. In the gyms parking lot. Passengers side back panel. Clearly it was some 3rd passenger getting out of their friends ride. Sad thing is, I was at the end of the lot with no one around when I parked and no one around when I got to my ride. I had washed it in the morning and nothing was there. Oh well, luckily it's small.

Here is what goes through my mind when I park my ride.
  • Ohh, compact, too small, no thanks.
  • Is that a shopping cart 7 spots away, too risky, the wind may pick up.
  • Sweet, there is a spot. Wait, there is a tree and a few birds.
  • Oh man, there is a smoking hot girl getting out of that car with a spot next to it. Dammit, why does that hoopty have to be on the other side of it.
  • Well, I guess those 10 free spots in the back of the lot look good. I'll just park there. (Upon returning to my ride, 2 cars parked on either side. Dam. Upon further inspection, no dings)
Basically, I am always in the back of the lot. My friends hate me for it.

Re: I got my first door ding this weekend.

This is a little off point, but some idiot sideswiped my drivers side mirror and shattered it and the plastic on my 2011 Overland. To order the mirror new it would cost about $500 from the dealer. The salvage yards in the area don't have any heated/autodim mirrors, but they have one drivers side heated/autodim/blind spot mirror available... Does anyone know if that will work or is the plug a different size/shape than what will fit mine? Advance notification wasn't available when I ordered my overland so I'm hoping that will work and save me some $$$. Ideas?

Awe man that sucks. A few months back I was driving by the beach and there must have been 5 or more cars with their mirrors broken off and hanging by the wires. So I guess some D-bag went on a mirror breaking spree.

But if I were you I would make your own topic for advice on this subject. You may not get many bites since this is 3 pages deep. Good luck on fixing your mirror.

Edit: I just checked ebay and there are a bunch of mirrors on there. I hope they have the one you need.

Re: I got my first door ding this weekend.

This is why I carry around stickers that say "I apologize in advance for being an inconsiderate asshole." I do like Kinko's for this. I do not believe in damaging another vehicle but if I can make something a pain in the ass for someone who is inconsiderate in the first place then I am all smiles.

I have slapped them on many cars. Even the saint who double and quad parks in a car.

I have been known to park and adjust if I did not get it straight enough to my satisfatction in even an empty parking lot. It takes all of 15 seconds to even out.

On another note I owned a GTO for 3 years and I put only 12K on it. I would always hunt out the ideal spot never got scratched but it drove me crazy when someone dinged it. But after that point the next ding wasn't so bad. They are cars designed to protect you from the elements on your trip out or back can't get too upset over it, it will drive you mad. That was one of the reasons I got a used Jeep. Things are going to happen but hey I didn't pay full price for it like I did the GTO.

Re: I got my first door ding this weekend.

It seems that we all have run into some real special people. A few months ago I was waiting for my wife in the rear of a parking lot. A guy pulled in next to me looks over, and then starts talking to his wife. I went back to reading my paper, and the next thing I know BOOM. He looks at me looks at his wife, and they start walking away. I'm taking off my belt, putting my coffee down, and throwing my paper down like WT-you know what. I get out yelling behind them HELLLOOO You HITTT MY Truck while checking for damage. Thanks to the rubber moulding there wasn't any, but there was something about the way he went about it that irked me. Well forgive me folks I saw red, and the next thing you know my foot made an impression on their door. I'm really not that type of person, but I've had other vehicles hit by jerks who left.

Re: I got my first door ding this weekend.

I've been meaning to post this but keep forgetting. This is the ding I got from a piece of tire that got tossed around on the freeway. There is also a thin horizontal line right under the ding which I thought looked odd. Head on angle doesn't look too bad. Local PDR quoted me $75 to $100.
