I think tar is on my car, help!

Sounds like a Dr. Seuss rhyme doesn't it?

I look at my jeep today and saw some huge scratches right above the wheel well. Needless to say I was not happy. Then I decided to touch the scratch. It was gooey. Didn't feel like a scratch at all. I was able to scratch some off with my fingernail. Black goo came off. I'm assuming it's tar? That would be much better than a scratch! So how do I get it off?

Turtle wax makes a product called bug and tar remover. Takes the tar right off.

I think tar is on my car, help!

Rapid Remover is awesome at breaking down tar, bugs or left over adhesive. It's not sold in stores though, online only and costs about $25 a bottle. Anything off the shelf will have half the power as this stuff.

Re: I think tar is on my car, help!

My wife used to work about an hour away from home and last year they were repaving over 50% of her drive so her car was caked with tar/grease. I picked up this stuff at Autozone and I was amazed how everything wiped right off. Cheesy name but it does the job.

Maybe I'll try wd-40. I have that lying around in the house. That doesn't ruin the paint?

No but good luck washing that off lol.

In all reality a good wash will get the wd40. Off, May take a couple tries since wd repels water

Any of the tar removers will also do a great job on those bug carcasses that a gentle soap and water effort wont touch. Better to dissolve the bug than scratch the paint trying to give it a scrape.

I've used a clay bar in the past to remove tar and bugs, if you're afraid of using chemicals on your paint. If there is copious amounts of tar though, this could be laborsome.

Re: I think tar is on my car, help!

Most stuff that will remove tar will also strip the wax off. Give it a fresh coat of wax after you have washed off the remover residue.

CarPro makes a product called Tar-X. Works great.

Re: I think tar is on my car, help!

I've used the CARpro and also Road Trip by Surf City. Both work well. Like mentioned previously, you will need to apply some sort of protection to the paint when you are done.
