Re: If anyone is interested in DE-Chroming-here's some pics

So....to perform a full chromectomy....

When I order the '16 Summit....pony-up an extra grand to have them delete HALF of the bling (Grrr!) and dull the other half (Grrr!)

Then, when the half-blacked-out rig arrives (probably just after the '17 goes into production) then I need to remove or black out the remaining chrome or satin...or whatever the un-black stuff is colored.

That will consist of:
Jeep emblem on hood (might leave it for contrast)
Grill Inserts (paint)
Grill mesh thingy (Paint)
Pouty mustache thingy under the bumper (Paint)
Fog light trim (paint)
Badge on front doors (remove)
Bezel around side windows (paint or wrap or replace with the new "SRT NIGHT" bezel.
Roof rail (paint or wrap)
Side lower thingy below the doors (Line-X)
Tail light Bezels (Paint or wrap or replace)
Rear bumper trim (paint or wrap or replace)
Rear badges (Might leave JEEP for contrast)

Am I missing anything?

IN addition to the Platinum half-black-out package for $1k, it sounds like about another $1k to do ALL of the remainder. Am I close on that guestimate?

So....Roughy $2k to do a good black out.

Or....skip the platinum expense and take a regular Summit from the dealership to the body shop and tell them to : "Paint the f'er black."

That sounds too simple. Other than the complications of painting the door handles...what am I missing?

I'd pay the extra $10k and get the SRT Night edition. Seriously.

Re: If anyone is interested in DE-Chroming-here's some pics

you pretty much have it covered in that list...i'd wrap as much in vinyl as you can as it's cheap and easy to do ...the handles were not that expensive but definitely required the help of the dealership to do.

Everything else is easy...You can pull the nose off these things in like 15 minutes and start disassembling all the bezels and pieces in no time

I painted all my chrome with that dupli color chrome black out paint...it worked ok...but not great ...I have the full SRT8 body package with a new trufiber CF grill so I didn't really care if this front end came out perfect or not...as I'll be swapping this whole nose out in the spring.

i'd probably recommend either painting the chrome right...or buying the pieces in black if possible and then wrapping as much as you can in black vinyl...

the tail lights and chrome step and rear emblem were a breeze to change as well

OR

Buy the SRT night edition as DCorn Mentioned

Thought about it...seriously.
I love the look and the numbers of the SRT.

However, the 1-2 miles of rocks and trails that I drive everyday would shred an incredibly STREET capable Jeep in a few months. And the increased maintenance costs would exceept the package upgrade.

I even thought about getting an SRT and doing some re-work to toughen it up here and there....Square peg, round hole....use the right tool for the job.

The Summit is the right tool...and it ALMOST has the right look.

Thats why the thread on the chromectomy caught my eye.

@ajag - Before the nose blackout this weekend, did you have a chrome lower mesh grill? Kind of looked like it in the pictures on 11/13 but wasn't sure if it was just the reflection. What's the info on that?

For the record, I actually like the aggressive look of that hood. Always have. Don't remember if I've ever posted anything saying so but, whenever you post a picture, I think how bada$$ it looks. Definitely not subtle but neither is the HP that supercharger puts out. Will be interesting to see how it blends with the SRT body kit.

Thanks man...I appreciate the feedback and compliments...As of Friday the Upper and lower grilles were both chrome mesh ...I bought them from CArID

I paid about $650 for the upper and lower in chrome...but you can buy them in black for about $500

T-Rex® - Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014 Sport Series Black Mesh Grille

Kind of expensive but they do offer a different look for the nose as opposed to the stock "cheap plastic" look

Now that my upper grill is painted black though the RIPP Intercooler sticks out like a sore thumb...so I think I need to take that off and paint that or powdercoat it as well..

Yeah, I figured the RIPP Intercooler would be the next thing you did. It does really show through now.

Those mesh inserts are pricey. I already have the Altitude "chrome" grill but would love to match the lower middle portion between the tow hooks. I haven't seen any affordable solutions for that though. Thanks for the info.

Re: If anyone is interested in DE-Chroming-here's some pics

I actually think the hood looks pretty badass too and like that it's different from everyone else's. The subtleness of the OEM SRT hood is cleaner for sure, but for the sake of having something different that's also not bad looking and still functional, I commend you.

Let me know when you decide to sell it. I may be interested, seeing as it'd be a straight swap from blue to blue.

First of all the Platinum package isn't a half black out package. It literally only offers the door handles and mirror caps body colored matched...well and lower side panels, but those weren't chrome to begin with. So its actually anything but a black out package. Just a some extra painted parts and everything is satin colored instead of chrome. From any sort of distance though they look just as bright and shiny as any other Summit.

Since your goal is to black out, the Platinum package is still the way to start since you would already be set with the mirror caps door handles and lower panels, but as far as the rest here is my input.

You can either consider purchasing all High Altitude Black Chrome parts to replace all the satin colored parts on the Summit. IMO thats the route I wanna go as something about body matched parts on the Summit tends to cheapen the look. Obviously this is just my opinion, but its just another option for you instead of paint or wrap. Instead of removing badges also consider just going with the gloss black ones from the High Altitude or Altitude. The roof rails, why bother wrapping or painting them? For like 40 bucks a piece you can get the "low profile" rails from the SRT/High Altitude/Altitude models. Looks sleeker and would probably be cheaper than getting the current ones refinished.

The last things you are missing is you will need SRT head lights and tail lights. Those are key items IMO. Nothing would look more out of place than a completely paint matched/blacked out Summit than one thats almost finished, only to have bright chrome headlights glaring at you. Same with the tail lights, just spend the $300-$400 and get brand new ones on ebay that come with the gloss black bezels already and then you get the darker looked SRT lenses. The head lights aren't gonna be cheap, but necessary. And I wouldn't recommend "tinting" the lens as IMO thats just looks stupid.

Oh, the last last thing would be the exhaust tips. You can have them painted black like the High Altitude edition comes.

So now that I think of it the most cost effective vehicle to get for blacking out would for sure be the High Altitude edition as pretty much most of the things you mentioned are already done. Then you can either leave or do what you want with the black chrome and you're done.

Re: If anyone is interested in DE-Chroming-here's some pics

I was just at the Jeep dealership ..dropping my jeep off and I was looking at some of the new High Altitudes...wow....pretty bad a$$ looking if you ask me

I love the black chrome trim that they outfit this jeep with ...the V6 one was only 47K sticker price also..I don't love the stock wheels but they're not bad...I like the silver accented interior as well...so much better than the Gold color.

If I were looking for a new non SRT jeep I'd definitely grab one of these High Altitudes...not much you really have to do to them off the showroom floor...

Yeah, the High Altitude is setup pretty much perfectly from the factory IMO. If I were to buy a HA literally the only thing I would do is tint match the two front door windows. That's it! Short of paying almost 70 grand for an SRT what more could you want? Great setup. As far as the interior, I do think the silver accents compliment the sportier theme, although I think the slightly gold tinted trim in all the others is downright gorgeous. I have the dark brown interior in my Summit and it's just perfect!

I'm trying to patiently wait until the HELLCAT SRT comes out but i'm really tempted to just buy a High Altitude and just Supercharge it ...for the money it's a great looking Jeep for sure...
