Installing Mirror with Homelinc?

I have a base 2012 Laredo with the standard "flip" mirror, but want to swap it out with a auto-dimming mirror that also has homelinc. I was looking at the Gentex line.

Can anyone recommend a good mirror?

Also, is the wiring harness already hidden up in the ceiling just before the windshield, or would wiring it up take some work?

Re: Installing Mirror with Homelinc?

Welcome!

I installed a Gentex autodimming mirror with Homelink in my previous GC (2011 Laredo). The wiring harness isn't already there. So I tapped into the power plug in the center stack. This plug only powers on when you start the vehicle and that's what you want. You don't want the mirror on 24/7. I ran the wiring through the headliner, down the A pillar and then into the back of the dash. A bit tricky, but doable.

Poop. I was hoping to avoid popping off trim and such.

No such luck I'm afraid. It's not a difficult mod though.

Care to share some details?

What year wk2 did you install on? Was the wiring there or did you have to add it? Where did you purchase the overhead console? Come on man, you can't post a picture in a thread like this without giving details!

2014, Had to add a jumper wire for power. I work in the auto industry and got the console free of charge directly from the supplier. I also work for the company that makes the homelink module.

I did this mod to my VW Jetta, super easy mod and fun to do. VW is buying back my Jetta and I'll be removing my Gentex mirror with autodim and homelink and I'd be happy to sell it to you... PM me and let me know...
