That's how all non-SRT/Altitude Grand Cherokee lights are. The side and back are gray colored instead of black. So thats technically not an error on their part, its accurate.
One thing to note is that since you have a High Altitude, those actually have completely different housings that have black inside bezels which give the red lens a darker appearance. If I had a High Altitude I wouldn't want to lose that look as the standard lights have a much brighter red lens because of that.

Here is a pic of my stock Summit tail light to show that the plastic is gray:

These next pictures are the best example I have showing the difference between SRT/Altitude lights compared to standard Grand Cherokee lights. In these pictures I had SRT gloss black bezels installed on my stock lights and they didn't look right at all. It wasn't until later that I found out that the SRT/Altitude lights are infact darker. So I ended buying SRT lights instead. Here you can clearly see the difference in the red lenses.

SRT housings:

I'm not saying anything is wrong here, just stating that I don't want you to lose that SRT/Altitude look going to a standard Grand Cherokee housing that is brighter red. The difference is pretty significant especially when comparing my two pictures above.

EDIT: I just saw the high quality pics added by user "14blackaltitude" and sure enough they actually appear to look more like SRT housings than the standard ones which I was surprised at considering they have the gray plastic backing. Man, after seeing these lights I may just have to buy them and sell my V3 Tritons. They look incredible! :-)

Well my understanding is that they ARE plug and play, but they actually went a step further and gave people the option of having the inner lights function as well if they want. If they are adding a feature that didn't come that way stock on the vehicle obviously some minor work will need to be done. If you want the new lights to function like stock from what I am gathering they are plug and play.

Don't get me started... i dealt with issues on my 2014 GC for 6 months straight before they replaced my Jeep with a new one.

Ive posted numerous times about having HID's installed and how they were being blamed, but never proved to have caused anything. That entire buy back process took years off my life with the amount of stress it caused me. Moving forward nothing gets installed on my Jeep unless its made by Mopar or is non-electrical part that can be removed without a trace.

Yeah I see what you mean. I have not had a chance to compare these lights to the SRT ones. Maybe I will sometime today.

Sorry for your troubles but there are plenty of people who have no issues at all, like myself and my 14'.

If you modify anything you take a risk at something going wrong. If you don't want that risk, then don't modify. It's simple.

The lights are a little bit brighter red because of the chrome instead of the black housings. I don't think they are as bright as your pictures of the non SRT lights. I might install them fully and see what they look like. I emailed the place I got these from to see if Eagle Eyes will be making the black housing ones.

What I suggest is to keep things in a way you can remove before taking to the dealership. I just went through a crazy time with dealership denying warranty repairs, but I am still installing these. However you can bet I will put everything back to stock if I have to take it to the dealership for anything electrical. This will save you a lot of headaches and preserve years of your life.

Another tip I learned, if dealership denies warranty work, take the truck back, put everything back to stock and take it do a dealership not related to the original one. This Chrysler insider's tip saved me. The only thing they can see on their system is warranty repairs.

Interesting, check out these aftermarket '14/'15 LED tail lights!

Hey guys, it looks like my lights are actually going to arrive later than I thought. I'm currently in New York, however I am due back in NC this weekend to get ready for my last semester at school.

I'm going to have the lights shipped to my school address, however I really need a reputable shop to install these for me. The problem is that I have no clue of any shops in my area.

I am located in High Point, NC. This is part of the triad (Winston-Salem, Greensboro, High Point).

I'm going to be buried in academic research for a good portion of this semester, and I was hoping to have these things in before heading down. Does anyone have suggestions?

Edit* Just to clarify I'm looking for a reputable shop in the triad area for this installation. Or even a suggestion on locating one.

I might wait on installing these. I emailed a few of the places selling these and they have stated that they have been getting alot of requests for the black version and they have let the manufacturer know. So maybe in a few months there will be an SRT version out there. I actually contemplated trying to 'unglue' the lens from the housing, so that it could be painted, but the glue is different from other lights that I have separated.

Re: Interesting, check out these aftermarket '14/'15 LED tail lights!

I installed mine this weekend. You can wedge the resitor behind the bumper cover in the opening you will see when you remove the taillight (bottom). Just unbolt the torx screw that holds the bumper cover and you will gain enough access to wedge the resistor in there. The wire you are going to tap to is on the top right corner of the tailgate. It's the only cable in that area that has a connector you can uplug. Can't miss it. Mine was a bit more complicated because I have customs rear fogs that emulate the taillights and it was a pain to fit the tailights back. Looks amazing though.
