Re: Lets talk about window tint

20% on front is about a perfect match to the factory rears. Putting anything on the rear is a waste. The rear is already ~20% from factory.

[QUOTE="travelhawk;758651"]Not sure where everyone lives, but note that some states -- California especially -- allow only a slight darkening of front seat and windshield windows. I don't know the exact darkening numbers (stated in the State Vehicle Code) but if the driver can't fully be seen in daylight that is definitely too dark. Apparently the law is for safety, for other motorists and for police officers.

That's the law where I am and I just renewed my inspection sticker last month and the % is verified in order to pass inspection.
But I love the look of tinted windows!

Yes that is the law in most states, unless you get a doctors prescription saying light gives you headaches or you know a few people that will pass safety for you

Tinting the rear windows isn't a waste if you're concerned about additional UV protection. I have 20% on the front windows. I tried 35% first, but it wasn't dark enough for me; especially with the light interior. Virginia only allows 50% on the front windows, but they won't fail you for tint at the safety inspection.

I am assuming that window tint shops can match the factory tint that is on the rear windows. That's the look I would go for; same tint all the way around, OEM, factory, clean.

Yes factory tint is 20% and you cannot remove it, my tint guy said they have a special tint that goes over factory if you want it 5% or darker.

Okay just saw a jeep 100% stock and decided I'm going to do 5% windows, 20% windshield.

Re: Lets talk about window tint

+2 at 20% front to match stock rears

+2 that 20% at night is dark for fronts requiring extra care while making turns

+2 that tinting rears adds heat reflection and perhaps additional UV protection

+2 check your individual state statutes, some fine, some don't: http://www.iwfa.com/Portals/0/PDFDoc...201-1-2013.pdf

Re: Lets talk about window tint

Anyone know anymore specifics on the factory tint? In my car, I put 30" Ceramic (Llumar CTX 30%) based tint all around except the windshield and it is the shit!!! no heat transfer through whatsoever. It cost's more though. I paid over $300 to install it on my Accord.

Reason I'm asking is that normal tint is metallic based. It does have heat resistance but not as good as ceramic.

Anyone know if the factory tint is ceramic or metallic?

All I know is its 20% and cannot be removed. You have to put tint over the factory tint

The factory "tint" is actually not a tint; the glass is dyed. Dyed glass provides little heat and UV reflection. In Australia front windows can be 35% VLT and rears 15%. Windscreen can be tinted any darkness, but only above the arc of the wipers. I'm just going to have 35% film added all around which will probably make the rears darker than 15% VLT but as long as the fronts aren't too dark it's okay.

If you want to keep the rears the same darkness you can get clear tint film to add heat and UV resistance.
