[MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

NO LOAD RESISTOR NEEDED for this specific brand! Reason? I measured with my multimeter, it drains 0.546 Amp current from the electric system so the BCM (Body Control Module) thinks there is no missing bulb. With a typical LED bulb on Amazon usually drains 0.15Amp - 0.26Amp (150mA - 260mA) (but this highly depends on the bulb you purchase) current which may not big enough in order to get rid of hyper flashing, that case you WILL need to tap a load resistor to the wire. WK2 (2014+) owners, go ahead plug and play.

For my initial installation last month, I had a pair of smaller output rear turn/brake 3157 LED made by Sylvania, a pair of JDM 3030 chiset 7443 Amber LED for front turn/parking signal. These two WILL cause hyper flashing as they only drain 0.151amp from the battery. I installed 8ohm load resistor for each of the rear 3157 LED to fix the hyper flashing. But after switching to the new ones, I detached the resistors as they get really HOT - 212F/degrees as I measured!

2011-2013 WK2 owners: sorry I don't have those to test with, if you can please update some information down below.

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

nice find. I see on the 7443s where it says power consumption is 6W but do not see anything on the 3157s...was there anything on the package?
No, there is nothing about any specification on the package. As you may've noticed there are tons of LED bulbs on Amazon, I was just lucky enough to get my hands on this type, and, I have just bought a multimeter last month to measure the current.

I won't trust any of those wattage mark on the package, sometimes they just use an equivalent wattage to halogen bulb to give customers idea of how bright it is. Always reference to the Lumen/flux rating coz that would be a more accurate information. Plus, u can reference to LED SMD spec sheet to look up all LED chip brightness and power specs, for example, the bulb I test uses 33SMD 5730chip, according to the chart it outputs 30-45lm flux, which will gives you 990-1485lm flux for each bulb. But careful when you calculate the current, you can't simply multiply 33*150mA, as not all 33chips are connected in series. You will have to use a multimeter to test it out.

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

$20 for amber bulbs...
Might have to pick up a pair and try them on my 2012.

Adding ballast resistors to the rear was easy for my Acme RedRocket 3157 bulbs (bolted to the pinch weld underneath) because I could use an aftermarket trailer harness so that I did't have to cut/splice into the OEM harness.

Which is why I didn't put LEDs in the front marker/turn position. No such harness available (different connectors).

For $20 these are worth checking out.

Sure keep us updated. But I have not tried on 2011-2013, the BCM could be different who knows.

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

i have 7443 switchback leds i tried installing 8ohm and 6 ohm resistors but still get bulb out error and hyper flashing any help ?
Questions:
#1 - did you use a voltmeter to ensure you were hooking up the ballast resistors onto the turn signal circuit and not the marker light circuit? (and make sure you have a good ground)

#2 - did you hook the resistors onto the front marker/turn circuit wires (under the hood). The Grand Cherokee has 4 individual turn signal circuits, one for each corner.

#3 - check to ensure that the outside bulbs are actually flashing. When I installed Acme Red Rockets into my rear stop/turn/marker positions, the stop/turn was not working. I had to use a sharp probe to reach into the bulb socket and bend the contacts out slightly so that they would make contact with the LED bulb contacts. Most of the LED bulb bases are just slightly smaller than the OEM glass bulb contacts.

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

Status Update:
They do NOT work in a 2012 Grand Cherokee.

Installed one LED and it flashed normal for 3 flashes, then went to a fast flash condition.

The funny thing was that I had to cycle the ignition to stop the fast flash after reinstalling the OEM amber bulb.

Oh well.
Glad Amazon has an easy return policy.

Sorry to hear that man, I guess load resistor then :(

I have 3157 LED from Diode Dynamics in 15 GC limited. They work perfect with no resistors, once in a while the dash with show a light out and then go away once I activate the turn signal for that light.

Sounds like the 2014+ models have a better tolerance for LED bulbs than the 2011-13 models.

Drat. :)

Just installed them, WOW what a difference in brightness. These are pretty damn bright compared to the stock bulbs. Love the new look and how crisp they are when blinking.

Highly recommend these ?

Is this real? So I buy them for my 2015 altitude, and just install like changing a bulb?
I have been looking into the vled but for $20 and no need for all those extra wiring and boxes. Seems like a no brainer. Would you recommend over the vled route?

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

I like the idea, but well built resisters get hot, and if these have a higher load internally, and in the socket, and if they're not made well, again internally. The "bulb" itself if made well has very little resistance so it's the board and parts that create the resistance. Why do they have more resistance than quality LEDs and is it actually a good thing. China isn't my favorite place for car parts. I'm sure 999/1000 bulbs are good.

These look good but I was wondering about the heat load also. I guess they should not dissipate anymore heat then the incandescent pulling about the same load. The white colored version of these ones say not to use them in driving lights because they will get too hot. Brake lights and turn signals are usually not on for long periods but for me its not uncommon to sit in traffic with my foot on the brake for three hours. I ordered a set may do a heat check before putting them in. They look good though

I just wanted to thank you!!
Just installed the LED bulbs, so much brighter and the instant on is great.
Saved me $100 and all the extra hardware and wires from the vleds.

Very happy with them. I feel like you hacked the jeep with these. ?
Here's a pic, can see the fullness of light and pure red brightness.
Best $20 mod ever!

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

Thinking out loud here...why would you purchase a red led bulb if the plastic lens/housing is red? Wouldn't they be even brighter (even at same 800 lumens) if you went with a white LED inside and let the red come from the lense? I assume the stock/factory incadescent bulb is white/clear? Below is a link for the same bulb but with white SMDs. Has anyone tried the ones that I linked to below?

Thanks!

I thought about that. The reason is I wasn't so sure about the actual power of the white LED, after a brief research I found out the white Aaron LED consume less power comparing to the red ones (not 100% sure) so I landed on red coz otherwise the BCM could still "think" there are missing bulbs(The whole idea behind this project is to draw as much current as you can w/o a load resistor in order to trick the BCM). And, red LED + red housing could give you more deep "cherry red" effect. I agree it won't make a lot different comparing to white LED + red housing. But anyway, if you happened to test those white LED bulbs, keep us updated.

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

I don't think the red bulb is much dimmer than the white, given the nature of LEDs. Also, having a pure white light behind a red lense runs the risk of making it have a pinkish hue.

These are LED's not halogens. LEDs don't lose brightness due to color change.. they aren't coated glass halogens to make the red color they are red LED's. As stated above picking red makes the color pop and stays definitely red and not potentially pink in thinner areas of housings.

Well i ordered these Aaron reds for the tails, along with a mix of stuff for rear fogs. Hoping this all works together well. Thanks OP for the discovery.

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

When I installed them only the left side worked and the right side hyper flashed. I drove around trying that out for one day then switched the left bulb for the right one and vice versa. Now they both hyper flashed so I put the stock bulbs back in and those LEDs in their packaging and they're in my garage. It seems like a nice mod and I'm happy for those that it worked for it just didn't work in my jeep. No resistors no wiring headaches = good idea...unless you're one of the less lucky ones ?

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

Just an update on these Aaron 3157 LEDs, they worked fine for a few days but today I got the hyper flash and I took them out. I did check the current they pulled vs the stock 3157s.

Stock incandescent 3157s
high filament draws 2.06 amps
low filament draws .58 amps

This Aaron LED 3157
high draws .45 amps
low draws .11 amps

They must be borderline on what is needed for it not to hyper flash as mine worked for a number of days before the computer picked up on it, so is good to be able to narrow it down a bit on the current load needed.

Just for info mine is a 2014 5.7 Summit and I have the SRT LED fogs installed and the Putco 921 and 7440 reverse LEDs installed. Both the fogs and the reverse lights work great plug and play no resistors.

Was worth a try for 20 bucks. Back they go to amazon glad they make it so easy.

I this think plays into whether the 3157 LED brake bulbs will throw codes; do you have other LED's installed? Since the draw is so close to the borderline of throwing a code or not, I think that since I have changed every bulb interior/exterior to LED's, I am already drawing much less power than the Jeep is expecting...so when the brake LED's go in they could push it into "danger" territory. This is just a GUESS...but based on a lot of LED "experiments" and a lot of reading. I am just glad I got LED's to work in my brake lights...makes them pop and let's the idiots behind me that they may want to stop as I do have Brembos haha

Re: [MUST READ] LED upgrade on 2014-2017 WK2(NO Resistor needed!)

Not sure if it matters within the BCM (body control module) but I have a 2016 JGC HA and I have the reverse lights swapped out to LED and I replaced the front fog lights with LEDs as well AND I had the dealership modify the BCM settings using Wiotech (sp) software for the LED fogs so that they do not flicker and do not require the use of inline capacitors.

I have only had the rear turn/brake led bulbs in for a few days, I hope that they continue to work.

maybe that dealer setting change on the BCM for the fogs helped yours even though that was not the intention. on the 2014s the fogs worked fine with out the setting change, the 2015+ needed the change for the fogs. thank god the 2014s didn't need it because my dealer would have battled me on it they are a difficult group. glad yours are working hope they continue to work for you. I'm going to keep an eye out for some other 3157s new stuff always coming out.

Just wanted to share that the putco plasma 3157 led brake lights from xenondepot are 100% plug and play on my 2015 grand Cherokee summit, not sure about other models but for me, I had a hyperflash on my dash that automatically resolved itself and went back to a normal blink within a few seconds..
