Re: My 2011 project Removed Side Chrome and Repainted Grill and Rear Emblem

Its a pretty easy job...

Both pieces come off easy (they just clip on, and u dont have to remove the bumper to remove the chrome grill) It justs snaps on.. just give it a lil force.. use a plastic paint spackle, works great!

1. wash and clean the plastic chrome
2. use 600 grit sandpaper and lightly sand the plastic to rough it up
3. clean again and use some alcohol on the plastic
4. Use krylon's spray paint for plastic (satin black)
5. Put down one coat, then lightly sand again with the 600 grit.
6. Clean again. Then put down a 3 coats of matte black
7. Use even coats a let dry in between

The chrome side paneling is easy too... just use the plastic paint spackle tool to slowly pry it off... its held on by 3M rubber stick tape

How did you go about removing the side chrome door moldings?

Re: My 2011 project Removed Side Chrome and Repainted Grill and Rear Emblem

Read the post above... Just slowly pry it off... It's held on by 3M rubber stick tape. Remove the excess tape with some goo off. I did this job in the freezing cold in sf. No need to heat the moldings. Wash then wax and your done. If u ever want to put them on again just purchase the 3M tape from home depot or lowes

Re: My 2011 project Removed Side Chrome and Repainted Grill and Rear Emblem

Check out the new jeep grand cherokee xplore. Just google it. They also removed the moldings and did the rear emblem in flat black. Also check out the Cherokees at the 2010 sema auto show. They did a street and off road edition. Again, side moldings were removed and the off road edition has a flat black color scheme

Re: My 2011 project Removed Side Chrome and Repainted Grill and Rear Emblem

I dont mind the side moldings, but mine have lifted edges and want to reapply. Just dont trust the lot boys to remove the moldings, knowing them they would probably use a plastic scrapper to remove the excess.

Re: My 2011 project Removed Side Chrome and Repainted Grill and Rear Emblem

haha..ouch? this might be a $40,000 car but the side moldings are cheap plastic... the 3M rubber stick tape can be taken off with your finger, it just rolls off, super easy... no need to use the plastic spackle for that... just use that tool to separate the plastic chrome from the 3M tape, then remove the excess with your finger...

If you want a luxury car drive a X5 or an Audi Q5... even those cars aren't loaded with cheap plastic... its a joke... this is a Jeep.. its meant for sport.. take the cheap plastic chrome off... thats my take..
