My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

Well, to begin with- it had to happen eventually... someone either did not take a liking to the car and carelessly or deliberated SLAMMED their door into mine or got a crowbar and gave a quick whack while I was parked on a street. The damage is right on the front passenger door side- precisely and I mean strategically spot-on right on the ridge-line of the door- the worst possible place. If you look at the before pics, it is quite deep, very visible, ugly, and pretty much impossible to ignore. If it was somewhere on the bottom of the rear bumper it might not bother me so much but on a brand new 2015 Summit

So off to the shops I went to get an estimate. I decided to investigate a couple of local shops boasting of their PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) skills. 2 of them told me that the dent was too deep and if they had to work on it, the ridge may completely collapse and more damage is done. I was advised to go to the body shop if I really wanted it fixed- and the damage- about $650-800 quid or more to get the whole door repainted. Besides there is no guarantee it is going match perfectly. The other guy said just ignore it and said fortunately it was not on the driver's side and I did not have to look at it every time I open the door- really A bunch of idiots.

I went to the third guy, and he said he could do it. It took him 2 hours- a lot of prying and stretching- with various techniques. He had to drill a small hole on the inside of the door (pic provided) to get behind the dent. He put a plastic cap afterwards to cover the hole. The guy is a magician. Anyways the results speak for itself- it is not quite perfect if you would look really close (about 3 inches from the door) but it is pretty good. I gave him the Mopar touch-up paint and it blended in nicely- you may feel a slightly rougher part where the dent was if you were to run your fingers right on it, but it is not really noticeable. I used flash in the photos (taken in my garage) and I know they are not the best quality but it is fine for the purpose. The cost... $130. And yes, I am so glad PDR exists and highly recommend it if the occasion arises. Thought I would share this with you folks.

Re: My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

That looks like it was very well done. I have had 3 experiences with PDR and I have been amazed at how well it turned out. Nobody could tell there was even a dent. One instance was like yours on the crease of the box on my truck. Two guys laughed at it and said I would need a whole new box side and a third PDR guy took one look and said he could do it with no problem, 45 minutes and $100.00 later it was gone. Nice job on shopping around it was smart move.

Re: My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

I only had 1 experience with PDR, it was not nearly as serious as yours but a guy took out a few small dents for me for like $75 I think. It took him an hour and a half maybe. 2 on the hood and 1 on the door and his work was flawless. I was thrilled!

Re: My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

Nice, SaintGermain, and thank you for sharing and also for the good photos. I have a similar ding on mine. I'll look for a PDR place and I'll take it around and ask, like you did.

Re: My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

They did a good job on that, often they well not want to do it when it is on a crease like that I have found. Id remember that guy for the future. so many people are quick to paint a whole door over something like that you did the right thing, don't ever mess with factory paint unless you have to.

Re: My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

For those that had good results; were they private or franchised PDR shops? I'm restoring VW GTI that has quite a few dings, nothing big or deep, and I prefer PDR over traditional repair.

Re: My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

PDR on flat panels is pretty straight forward. On a seam like yours, it must have been a nightmare.

Excellent results though.

Re: My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

Got a similar issue. Someone swiped me on the driver side (Black 2014 Limited), and took some of the paint off the car on the panel near the front wheel. Not exactly the same, but hoping to figure out how the heck to fix it without spending a fortune. It also unfortunately happen far out in a parking lot with no security camera so I am stuck with footing this myself.

But thanks for sharing this post. Made me feel better

Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: My Paintless Dent Repair Experience

You certainly found a good one, Saint Germain. That looks like an excellent job on a very difficult dent to repair.

The person that I went to for my truck was private and worked from his house and I found him from asking at a few body shops I went to. A few years ago I had someone hit the front fender crease on my 2006 GC and I found a different guy who had a PDR shop set up in town. He charged me $50.00 and removed the dent then polished the area to remove any scratches. I would go back to him anytime.
