Need advice on what/if to paint...

Stopped by my paint guy today and asked about painting all the chrome to body color. He quoted me at $250 for labor, front grill (no mesh inserts), mirror caps, window trim, roof rack(black), rear brow, door handles, front splitter, bull bar(black) and rear tailgate strip. If this were your WK2 what would you paint, what would you flatte black or am I silly for wrecking a perfectly sexy vehicle? I already have black nerf bars ordered and will be peeling the chrome side strips off. I really have never been a fan of chrome, but at times I think I just need to be content and use the extra money to stock pile bullets... Any input would be appreciated, thanks

Re: Need advice on what/if to paint...

That sounds like a really good price for all of that chrome that's on it. I'd paint all of the chrome except the roof rails and window trim and front and rear lower chrome strips. What color would you paint the window trim if you do? Gloss Black to match the pillars maybe?

Re: Need advice on what/if to paint...

I am antichrome at heart, but there is just so much on this car and after the amount of work I've done to get it looking like this, it makes me twitch to think that I would rub off all the chrome (that most people would love to have) and paint it. I was expecting the quote to be 600+ and I was just going to get the mirror caps and rear brow done. He opened up a pandora's box now... So the roof rails have to be black, red wouldn't look right up there IMO. Should the rear brow be flat black or red? Window trim flat black or red? Front grill flat black or red? Rear liftgate trim flat black or red?

Re: Need advice on what/if to paint...

If you are set on de-chroming This is how I would do it if it were mine.

Rear brow body color matched, but leave the bumper guard as is with the small chrome strip.
The side I would peel the chrome moulding off and add the grand Cherokee letters. Get painted mirror caps, and painted door handles look decent either way. The window trim I would leave chrome to accent the small amounts of chrome left around.
As for the front I think a paint matched grill with the mesh left chrome would look sharp.
I personally would remove that big chrome bar thing in the front. I'm not sure what the point of it is except being big and bulky and kind of an eye sore. But again, that's just my opinion and you may like it.

So my vote goes to a partial de-chrome with color matching some of the main parts. Keep us up to date on your progress. If you decide to leave it stock it's still a beautiful Jeep and you can't go wrong. I still say remove that thing in the front though either way ;-)

Yes the roof rails for sure black, although another option is to just remove those and put the SRT roof rail delete ones up there. But either way your right painting those red would not look good.
The rear brow I say go body color it looks very slick that way. The black brow looks good, but kind of stands out unless you have a lot of other black on the car.
Window trim absolutely not red. That would look weird to. Either leave that chrome or go flat or gloss black your choice, either would look decent. I tried plasti-dip just to see how it would look but I peeled it off after a day. It was ok, but plasti-dip wasn't perfect looking so I wanted it off.
Front grill red and leave the insert chrome.
Rear hatch trim leave it chrome or put the Laredo black one on either way looks good.

Yes! I agree with JTS. That's what I was trying to say but he did it better.

Re: Need advice on what/if to paint...

In regards to the bull bar reference- I have 3 marks on that bar from people backing into me. Now maybe they would have stopped in the 3 inches that bar sticks out from my car, but that's already closer than I want them. It has paid for itself so many times over. I also drive in a lot of corn fields, it talks the brunt of the stalks, saving my much more expensive paint behind.
Back on topic- votes seemed to be mixed. Me and Scott for black, the rest for chrome. Just so you know, this all started because of those rims Scott. I realized I needed to get other stuff done before I could rock the black rims.
The mirror caps, door handles and rear brow need to be painted IMO. The front grill and window surrounds are really what stump me. I use this vehicle for work and I deal with a lot of farmers. Looking gangster isn't a good thing and farmers always like chrome. It's shallow but so true.

Re: Need advice on what/if to paint...

But I deal with insurance and very large amounts of money. Sometimes their farm's survival rides on the payments I am responsible for allocating/supervising. They already are apprehensive about a young kid, having a blacked out car does not help. Most of the reason the M3 had to move along, and it was WORTHLESS in the winter. Not a good thing in the upper midwest.
