Need roof rack and basket suggestions...

Im looking for a set up to add a nice basket for off road use, will leave it on 24/7.

I will probably set up a 40" LED bar on the basket facing forward and a pair f cubes facing the rear.

What is the quietest rails/rack/basket combo out there you guys would recommend? I would love to get a GOBI but they are just too expensive...

THX in advance

Re: Need roof rack and basket suggestions...

I am looking for suggestions as well. Still waiting for the Wrangler I ordered to arrive at the dealership.

I too came across the GOBI setup and while it looks awesome and the reviews are good, I took a look at the price and almost fell out of my chair!

Have you found anything yet? I am tempted to have my co-worker fabricate one for me (he owes me a few favors at this point and he does fab work as a hobby).

Good luck!

Re: Need roof rack and basket suggestions...

I went with the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform and have had it fitted permanently for a little over six months now. There is a very slight increase in noise while travelling at highway speed and this is slightly more evident with a cross wind but overall it's really not bad. It comes with a levelling kit and I have mine tweaked to be perfectly level. If you decide to go with the Rhino then I have the following tips for you to save some headaches.
- it requires a torx bit for fitting.
- the bolts supplied with the levelling kit only work with both plates (for a 20mm lift). If you only fit one you will need a slightly shorter bolt.
- the instructions that come with the rack are incorrect. You will need to drill additional holes to mount the rack.
- don't plan to pick the product up from a retailer as it comes fully assembled and there is no way to transport it with your Jeep. I ended up fitting mine in the carpark with the help of a staff member from the store to lift it on.

The accessories for it are numerous. I'm about to fit up a 48" light bar to the front of it and should be able to conceal the wiring nicely under the rack and feed it in through the tail gate.

I also have the Rhino half size luggage bag and it is epic. It takes one half of the rack and I can fit exactly two full size suitcases inside it. It's fantastic for touring.

The other accessories for it include ski and snowboard mounts, bike mounts, jack and shovel holders, kayak loaders etc. Loads of options and this is why I chose it.

I also went with the Rhino Rack Pioneer Platform.
My installation was relatively easy and did not require any additional holes to be drilled. Here are links to the parts you'll need :

Pioneer Platform - #42100B | Rhino-Rack

Pioneer Leg Height Spacer - #PLHSPAIR | Rhino-Rack

RLCP Leg Set - #RLCP27 | Rhino-Rack

Installing it anytime soon? Would love to see it once you've installed it.
Are you installing it with the new LED Light Bracket that was recently released for the rack?

Mate, I'd be interested to know the centre to centre measurements for the holes in the rack that have been used for mounting. Perhaps I received old stock of the product—I do know of other GC owners having to do the same though.

I'm hoping to have it all done by Christmas. I was deciding between a 38" and 48" bar but I'm going to do the bigger one.

The 38" would fit nicely between the inside edges of the rounded corners of the rack, and the 48" leaves about 1.5" gap each side compared to the overall width of the rack.

To mount it I'll be using the Rhino LED/Spot brackets for the underside of the bar as the particular bar has three sliding mounting points under it. I don't think that the Rhino LED end mounts would work on a bar that is 48" long, but may on one that's 38".

I'll post my progress as I go.

I worked extensively with Rhino on this and dicovered there seems to be inconsistency with the mounting points on some Grand Cherokees. At that point Rhino concluded it only affected a small number of them so couldn't care less about the issue any further - wouldn't even put a warning in the instructions that the install may not work as advised.

My theory is the difference is with those of us who have the panoramic sunroof, that the mount points are in a slightly different position because of a structural difference with that.

Ultimately it means I have to drill a hole in mine but have not got around to it for months - much to the annoyance of my wife as its been in our hallway ever since

So, are you saying you DO have the sunroof?

I have Laredo with no sunroof and I had to drill holes in the rack.

Is it possibly an early vs late build change? Mine was a September '13 MY14.

Hey Matt Chops

Off topic but I really like your rims. Did you have them powder coated? Looks like flat black? My WK2 is Granite Crystal and have been considering getting my rims powder coated flat black but have been looking everywhere for pictures! Finally found one!
