Re: New phone mounting bracket

I've ordered the Kuda mount (model 299435) and a ProClip Adjustable Charging Holder with Tilt Swivel and Cigarette Lighter Adapter (model 521165) to use with my iPhone 4S. I'll probably route the cable through the inside of the vent to avoid making a visible hole in the dash. I have a dark frost beige (aka dark brown) dash and the Kuda mount comes only in black, but I figure that the ProClip holder will be black, anyway. I'll post photos after I've gotten everything mounted, which will probably be after the weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Re: New phone mounting bracket

Installed the Kuda mount last night with a cheap universal cell phone holder (temporary until my ProClip holder arrives) and I'm happy with the results. The center console bezel was a pain to remove since it was the first time I removed it and I didn't want to break anything. I found the bezel clip points on WK2Jeeps.com and started from the bottom and worked my way up. One thing I have to warn everyone is that the Kuda mount restricts the vent's movement and you can no longer aim the vent up. The vent can aim straight and down which is not a problem for me but this may concern others.
With the bezel detached, unplug the following two cables.

Once the cables are off you can mount the Kuda mount to the top of the driver side air vent. The electrical tape is temporarily holding the ProClip holder base.

You have to work the mount onto the vent because it's a tight fight with the leather wrapping around the bottom lip of the mount. I recommend pushing the mount as far to the right of the vent as possible. This allows the vent to have more movement. Once you're satisfied with the position, install the screw through the top metal tab of the mount into the plastic bracket that is part of the bezel clip.

Once screwed down, the mount's not going anywhere! I then screwed down the ProClip base and reconnected the two cables and put the bezel back on.

I then hooked up my universal phone holder and this is what the final installation looks like.

It's in the perfect location with easy reach from the driver. Here's a side shot of the mount and holder.

Now I'm just waiting to replace the universal holder with the ProClip HTC Thunderbolt holder and I'll be good to go. Overall a very easy installation. Just take it easy around the top clips cause those were the hardest for me to unclip. I have more pics of the mount and installation if you'll want to see or if anybody has questions.

Re: New phone mounting bracket

Thank you for detailed write up. It looks very nice.

Did you have a chance to drive around with the phone on the bracket? And was it making any noise? My concern is that with the extra weight of the phone, it may make some noise due to rather flimsy center consol bezel.

I've driven it for the past day and a half with the phone and no vibration noise at all. The leather wrap and screw keep everything pretty tight and so far I'm very happy with it. Overall I give it a 4 out of 5 with the -1 due to the restriction of the air vent angle upward.

Both the mount and the dock that I ordered are back ordered.

Thanks for the detailed write-up, tat2boy!

Re: New phone mounting bracket

[QUOTE=tat2boy;521460]

Great mount. I'll get the same Kuda mount
http://www.kudausa.com/manuals/jeep_...tion_mount.pdf

but want to use it in combination with iPhone 4 (with case) and this Brodit # 511165 mount
http://www.proclipusa.net/media/docu...ons/511165.pdf

tat2boy: Do you think this Kuda/Brodit combo would work?
I'm not sure if the Brodit holder is too thick moving the phone too close to the steering wheel....

I'm pretty sure the ProClip / Brodit holder should work just fine with the Kuda mount. My HTC Thunderbolt ProClip holder just arrived but I haven't had a chance to install it yet. But I compared it to my cheapy universal holder and it's actually no deeper/wider so I'm betting the same for your holder.

Re: New phone mounting bracket

Here is my thought.

I have used KUDA for other vehicles and liked them a lot. But for WK2, I'm interested in trying little different approach.

My phone is Blackberry 9900 and I'm thinking of putting a mounting bracket on one of the buttons at center stack below AC, radio unit. I can probably relocate "limited slip differential" button(first button on the left) to the spot where blank button is currently located at(yellow circle). Then take out that blank button and put it on the spot where LSD button used to be at. And I will put a mounting bracket(like the one from Proclip) on this empty button using single screw.

Do youguys think this might work? Any feedback will be appreciated.

I think it might work as long as there is something solid you can mount it to behind the blank button. My concern is that it will be kinda low and not in comfortable arm's reach but I'm also only 5'8" in shoes so maybe that's not too difficult to reach for you.

On all my cars I found it beneficial to mount the phone as high as possible (same height or higher than head-unit) so I can easily see it without looking too far down. I'm not saying that I search for phone numbers, but well, it happens...
Initially, I was thinking of getting KUDA that mounts to passenger side but realized it's kind of hard to reach from driver side. Then I looked at the one tat2boy used but it restricts vent's movement. So, I was looking for another option. I don't like to mount things too high. Even though it's easy to see and practical to use the phone, it sometimes blocks driving view IMO.
