Re: Optimum Location for E-Z Pass Card

I live in the Bay Area and I just recently learned that you don't actually have to have your EZ Pass/Fast Pass transmitter in your vehicle. If you go through a EZ Pass/Fast Pass lane and don't have a transmitter, a camera takes your license plate picture and checks to see if you are a registered EZ Pass/Fast Pass user. If you are, they charge your account. I did this recently (I purposely left my transmitter at home) and a charge was deducted from my account as though I had my transmitter. Just make sure you have registered your vehicle with the service.

Re: Optimum Location for E-Z Pass Card

I keep mine in the sunglass holder in the overhead console. Works every time. Occasionally I just pull it out and hold it out -- just in case

Re: Optimum Location for E-Z Pass Card

There was another thread on this issue earlier this year. I have mine where the instructions said... on the passenger's side windshield behind the mirror. Works fine and out of my line of sight.

I thought so, too, but couldn't find it so posted a new thread. Apparently something unique with the search routine, as even now it finds no threads with "E-Z".

E-Z is NY term. Other compatable states use their own unique terms.

Re: Optimum Location for E-Z Pass Card

Mine is on the windshield behind the rear view mirror...it actually is over to the right a bit so that the mirror mostly blocks it from view.

Purchased mine in NH where it is called "E-ZPass".

E-Z Pass is in many of the northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states and reaches into the near upper Midwest. But elsewhere most states either have no comparable system or, as you suggest, their own proprietary system (CA, TX, FL, etc.). However, E-Z Pass is slowly moving towards becoming a defacto national standard.

What's coming out of this thread is that neither the WK2 nor, it seems, other vehicles come with an out-of-sight nook for the card/box. Perhaps this will change once the E-Z Pass box is replaced next year by a card, like I believe is already being used by most or all non-E-Z-Pass systems. Sticking cards onto mirrors and behind grilles is primitive, and most folks use the GC's glasses overhead storage for . . . glasses.

Either way, it would make sense to have a hidden spot for these, like garage door openers. I thought maybe I missed spotting something like this on the WK2.
I suspect thats not going to happen, these are non powered credit card sized stickers they are actually Mini RFID passive transponders. They operate from the energy emitted by toll barrier detectors (interrogator) and therefore need to be visible. This is usually due to the large distances between the two devices. It's the same technology reatail stores use these days, the little white 2x2 inch sticker or 1/2 by 1.25 inch white plastic strip.

They are by design single (vehicle) use. In other words not meant to be transportable like the white box. However some folks have gotten creative and use simple tape to hold them on temporarilly. These devices generaly operate at frequency 125khz or 13.56MHz but can operate at many frequency ranges. I don't know what frequency they are using for the Sunpass or other systems like in TX.

Great summary! Perhaps they could be installed at the factory as part of the vehicle?

Re: Optimum Location for E-Z Pass Card

I have yet to put my ezpass up on the windshield also. got a new set of adhesive strips from ezpass, but not exactly sure where to put it on the window. In my last car i had it to the right of the rearview mirror passenger side.

Now, my question is, I wonder if i can put the ezpass in the area of the windshield with the black pattern around the mirror, or do i have to put it out of that area to be detected?
