Overland Pano roof - strength against hail?

Hello,

I would very much appreciate feedback from anyone with experience and can speak to the strength of the roof glass and help lessen concern about the pano roof being damaged by hail/road rocks, using the roof rack with cross bars to hold gear, off road equipment, etc? Maybe share your experience where the roof has held fine during a hail storm, etc?

This is the only item causing hesitation on purchasing an Overland.

A little background, if you care to know more:

Our 1999 JGC is on its final legs - so within a week, hubby and I will finally pull the trigger on a new one! This forum and your input has been extremely helpful in my understanding of what is available and the difference between the trim lines.

I really want the Overland - my husband hates the idea of a sun roof with major concerns being a sheet of glass that is vulnerable to hail/road damage. He is also concerned with potential damage to the glass when tying things to the roof rack - we will get after market cross rails because we use our roof rack on a regular basis.

I understand his concern and can really care less about the pano roof and would not have it as an option, if we could avoid it - even looked at the Limited as an option but I just like the Overland for our use over the Limited.

In reading through the various threads on this forum, I have not seen a lot of problems referencing damage to the sunroof from hail/driving hazards (rocks, etc). I have seen plenty of pictures of folks on this forum and others, off-roading with baskets and other items, fully using their roof racks on Overlands and Summits. So I can see that it is does not hamper real use of the Jeep.

Can any of you speak from personal experience to the strength of the roof glass in these situations? and help lessen this concern?

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide - have I said I really want an Overland?! ;-)

Re: Overland Pano roof - strength against hail?

About 2 months ago we had a major hail storm here in Colorado Springs, 3' stones that were very hard. I got $9K worth of damage to my limited with a pano roof, including destroying my windshield. No damage to the pano roof or any other glass. I was surprised, there were many cars with their sunroofs punched through on our street.

We drove through a thunderstorm with small hail in Wyoming. No dents in the sheet metal but it was loud as heck hitting the sunroof.

Re: Overland Pano roof - strength against hail?

No hail experience here, but as far as the pano roof itself...such a great feature I don't know why anyone wouldn't want it. When the power shade is open it adds such a great ambience in the cabin. Best of all if you want o sunroof, just close the power shade and it looks like it has no roof. Get it, you guys won't be disappointed!! User Myway1 above killed any concern about hail being an issue

Wow!!!

3" hail, busted windshield and other damage to the jeep, but no damage tot the pano roof? Now, that should be proof enough! ;-)

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for sharing - I can imagine the first time we get caught in a storm ... the sound enough together with the anticipation of getting home to look for damage.

Re: Overland Pano roof - strength against hail?

It's a lot tougher than the hood. Hood dents very easily because it's aluminum.

Re: Overland Pano roof - strength against hail?

Pea to dime size hail, twice. Amazingly, no damage to vehicle. Odds of being hit by a drunk driver are probably greater. (Sorry for the downer).

Exactly!...I was caught in a hail storm (not the worst I've been in) one large dent on the roof and a few dings on the hood. The hood is aluminum and it isn't as strong as the Pano-roof. I would not be afraid to strap things to the roof its built that tough. Just stay in accordance with the owners manual about weight limits, get a good set of cross rails and you will be fine. I don't open mine very often or use it much at all and like mentioned if you keep the sun screen closed you forget its there. Also I have not had any issues with it as far as leaks etc..

Re: Overland Pano roof - strength against hail?

I figure if you do something that would have broken the glass, you woulda put a big dent in your roof anyway and that may be more expensive than the glass...

Re: Overland Pano roof - strength against hail?

I've had glass sunroofs in 5 of my last 6 GC's. I've had grape to golf ball size hail and some fairly large gravel rocks bounce off of them over the years. The most I've ever had for damage were tiny nicks in the glass from some of the larger rocks. Never had one crack or shatter. Maybe I've just been lucky but that glass is a lot tougher than you think.
