Paint project...need some pointers

I bought this stuff last year and sat on it. I decided to give it a try. The brow cover is chrome/ABS plastic that would stick to the current one with 3M tape. As far as painting, I'm guessing I need to sand the shine off, add a couple of coats of primer (sand more?)...then 3-4 coats of base then 1-2 coats of clear? Please, any insight would be awesome!

Re: Paint project...need some pointers

If I were doing this I would sand and it with first a rougher grade maybe 120 then go finer at least 220 or more. Some might even wet sand it.

So first the 120, then the 220, then primer? Is wet sanding exactly how it sounds...sanding while putting water on the object?

Re: Paint project...need some pointers

yes just wet it, you can go finer if you chose.

The surface should be fairly smooth already so you need to remove the chrome with lower grit then go finer.
The wet helps with surface sanding and it also helps keep the chrome dust to a minimum.

I'm not a car body guy but I have sprayed many prototypes.

Re: Paint project...need some pointers

My goal is to get rid of the shine and have a surface good enough to maintain the primer, base and clear.

Always a good idea to add a couple coats of adhesion promoter before applying your primer.

Totally forgot about that! Thanks! What's recommended, duplicolor or bulldog?

Re: Paint project...need some pointers

I used duplicolor when I painted some bare plastic pieces on my jeep. I had good results with that. I think both are fine.

Re: Paint project...need some pointers

To recap....

1. Sanding: couldn't find 120, so I have 80 and 220
2. Adhesive promoter...1 or 2 coats?
3. Primer- 1 or 2 coats?
4. Base- 2 or 3 coats?
5. Clear- 1 or 2 coats

if you want the clear to match other paint use the 2K clear. and follow the directions on the can regarding coats and dry time etc.

80 is too aggressive and the gap between it and 220 will make a smooth finish less likely than if you started higher. Considering what needs to be done and the existing finish I might start with the 220 and end up at 400. You really only need to break the surface and remove any imperfections you're not removing the chrome. Clean your surface well, I like acetone because it's easy.
