Rattling Tonneu Cover?

Ive had a persistent rattling coming from the trunk of my car. My first though was my work junk rattling around. However the other day I emptied my car and it was still there!

I think ive narrowed it down to the tonneau cover that came with the vehicle. Has anyone had this rattling (or is currently suffering) and is there a solution?

Re: Rattling Tonneu Cover?

I have a 15 limited ecodiesel and I noticed the rattling while at highway speed. No ideas on a fix. I'll play with it today and see what I come up with. Good luck!

Re: Rattling Tonneu Cover?

I wouldn't know about the tonneau cover. It is removed on the day of purchase and reinstalled on the day of sale. It takes up valuable load capacity and tinted windows do a good job of keeping prying eyes out of the "way back".

Re: Rattling Tonneu Cover?

The tonneau cover is one of the rattle points along with a few others took a little while to isolate and get rid of them all but all is rattle free now. the tonneau cover was the easiest fix, relocate to the corner of the garage. I don't understand the purpose of that thing all it does is get in the way. every time I want to put something in there always banging around talking that thing out. windows are already tinted and I rarely haul bars of gold in the back, its more of a nuisance than its limited use is worth.

Re: Rattling Tonneu Cover?

I keep work supplies in the trunk of my vehicle and the Tonneau cover is a good theft deterrent for that. Last thing I need is someone breaking into my vehicle because they see a hard plastic pelican case and assume its something valuable. Its not and now I have to deal with the break in.

Ill have to play around with it and see if its something strategic pieces of felt could fix. It is pretty frustrating.

yes sounds like you found a good use for it. I think I wrapped one of those micro small bungy cords around it before I just decided to get rid of it, well placed Velcro does well for rattles also. I went through identifying a number of rattles at the link below some come from places you would not think. If you have others take a look at the link it may help save some time.

Re: Rattling Tonneu Cover?

I have confirmed 100% that the rattling is coming from the stock tonneau cover. I went to the trunk and started lightly tapping on the top of the cover housing (the metal piece where the cover rolls into).

Sure enough, slight vibration to it and it rattles like a babys toy. Not quite sure how to fix it. I shoved some folded up paper into the end caps to try and apply more pressure to the metal house. It worked for all of 10 minutes.

Not quite sure what the solution is or if its even all tonneau covers (maybe i just got lucky?). Its looking like the options are to either deal with it, remove it, or beg jeep for a new one (which is highly doubtful).

If it's something you like and are making use of I would not get rid of it, it's a feature of the jeep they need to make right. Dump the problem back on the dealer to correct, rattles regardless of the source are something they should correct in your new vehicle. Since you have isolated what it is let them know that and let them figure out the solution. Mr Dealer the cargo cover in my jeep is making loud unacceptable rattling please fix the problem. If they refuse call corporate and go to a different dealer. What I would do any way If you have exhausted the at home quick fixes

Using that Tonneau Cover is just like putting a sign in your Jeep saying, "Attention Thief, I am hiding something valuable under this cover". I put mine under my bed on day one. Plus I use my Jeep Cherokee like a covered pickup truck or El Camino and that cover restricts what and how much I can haul. On the new Cherokee it has become an option and you no longer need to pay for it if you will not use it.

Yeah mine went to the corner of the garage shortly after I bought the GC. Whenever I wanted to put something in there it was always in the way and I was taking it out and of course the rattling noise it made.

Re: Rattling Tonneu Cover?

Jeep made a design mistake when they put the mounting position for the tonneau cover so low. When I had my 2000 WJ Limited, that tonneau cover was mounted higher and it could usually cover most items. So the one from mine sits in the garage.

Re: Rattling Tonneu Cover?

Saying the tonneau cover is a beacon for thieves is like saying the trunk of every vehicle is the same thing. Just because its covered doesnt necessarily mean theres something of value underneath. It does offer the protection of them not knowing and maybe that not knowing is just enough for them to pass over the vehicle to one thats a sure thing.

By this logic its either keep nothing in your vehicle ever or leave everything visible so the crooks know theres something/nothing worth taking.
