Rear Tire Carrier - HITCHGATE SOLO

It's been a while since I last posted so I wanted to send out a quick post...

Since I am in the process of preparing to visit Big Bend State Park in Texas and explore some of the Off Road trails there, one of the things on my list is to bring a 2nd spare tire. So I decided to go with the Hitchgate Solo from Wilco. I have attached a couple of quick photos so folks can see what it looks like on a WK2. So far I am very pleased with it!

I will drive around with the Hitchgate for a while in order to see what issues if any I encounter with it...

EcoDiesel! 👍. To bad the tire gate obscures your rear plate, and part of the exhaust.

Re: Rear Tire Carrier - HITCHGATE SOLO

Wilco has a license plate relocation kit for the Solo that mounts on the hitchgate itself so I am waiting for that to come in to see how it looks... In the meantime I have a DIY mount on the wheel... So I will see which mounting position I prefer...

Also because of the position of the tire, I can still see through the back window... When the weather gets better I will try and take some driver "visibility" photos...

Pretty cool! What about the reverse camera, reverse sensors, and powered tailgate feature?

Re: Rear Tire Carrier - HITCHGATE SOLO

We had one on our Expedition we built. It was a great piece. Very sturdy and didnt make any noise. It has a way of tighting it on the hitch to prevent it from moving side to side etc.

Re: Rear Tire Carrier - HITCHGATE SOLO

Looks great for a weekend offroad trip where you want to have a 2nd spare, but I see a couple issues.

#1 - blocking the rear license plate. Local "Revenue" Enforcement Officers are going to have a hissy fit.

#2 - blocking the rear camera. Not a problem if you have a spotter with you, but in general (and off the trails) that would not be fun.

I realize mirrors have been around a lot longer than backup cameras, and I tend to use my mirrors more than the camera, but it does come in handy in tight spots.

Re: Rear Tire Carrier - HITCHGATE SOLO

Yeah, the backup camera has come in handy on a few occasions being solo. That's what I'm thinking about too.

Maybe, depending on where you are, you could swing the tire out temporarily to make use of the camera.

OP, can you take a photo of the backup camera view?

Re: Rear Tire Carrier - HITCHGATE SOLO

Had the original on my 99 WJ back when it was hitchgate. It worked great. Unfortunately I had to sell my WJ when I moved overseas.

Re: Rear Tire Carrier - HITCHGATE SOLO

Ok guys, the weather was good over the weekend so I was able to get additional photos...

@DrSpeed - I have attached a photo of what the view looks like through backup camera as well as the view from the rear view mirror.

@Governor - I have been driving around with it for several days going over railroad tracks and various bumpy roads and there has not been one sound from the hitch. It has a very nice built in anti-wobbling mechanism.

Also I have included a photo of the 2" spacer I had to use in order to mount the Stock wheel... Remember Wilco does sell a spacer for the hitch BUT you have to specifically ask for it since it is not on their order page...I did not know this when I placed the order so the spacer in the photo is from a DIFFERENT company...

Anyway I hope this info helps!
PS
I am not sure why this website keeps rotating some of the photos I uploaded, so sorry for that!
