Re: Removing liftgate chrome strip

Looks great Moose, especially on silver! Wonder how it would look body matched black? Hmmmm

Re: Removing liftgate chrome strip

Moosehead,

How much did the chrome piece cost and how much for the paint job by Scott? Also, did the button that opens the liftgate get painted or is it still chrome?

Thanks

Re: Removing liftgate chrome strip

Thanks for the comments gents. +1 to the mirrors, that was a huge visual improvement IMO, I was lucky enough to get a set of take offs from someone who wanted chrome. I'm still thinking about the grill, not sure, but it looks great painted.

Scott did this painted piece for circa $80 plus shipping, maybe it would be cheaper if you kept the Jeep logo same color. No brainer.

I got the replacement rear fixture, which includes both the chrome strip and wiring chassis, for $100 from ebay off a wreck job. You can probably source the chrome strip only for similar cost, not sure (or maybe go ghetto for 7-10 days while Scott gets your OEM done). Only the chrome strip is needed and fits hatch lids both with and without the rear view camera. The button is also painted and is a separate piece.

Re: Removing liftgate chrome strip

Mine is all done. I really need to wash the jeep before I put up pics of the rear because the paint other than the rear strip is dingy but here is what the grill and mirror caps look like. I absolutely love how it looks now.

I always loved this look, it was going to be my second choice if black wasn't available.

Reminds me of...

That looks outstanding.

In my opinion as well, Jeep never should have "chromed" that piece on the hatch. It looks too much like a Lexus.

I agree. I actually thought the front grill being painted to match really did even more to enhance the appearance of my Jeep but the rear strip really helped tie it all together.

Re: Removing liftgate chrome strip

Did they just paint over the chrome, or did they somehow strip it off first?

The chrome is painted over. He used acid etch primer, basecoat, clearcoat. The Grill, mirror caps and rear chrome strip were all done this same way. It turned out really well.

Re: Removing liftgate chrome strip

I just used a mouse sander with 220 grit sandpaper, sanded the shit out of it, and sprayed 4 coats of Dupli-Color Perfect match CBCC0410 Bright Silver Metallic that matched mine perfectly, wetsanding between each coat with 1500 grit paper, then put on 4 coats of Dupli-Color Clear Coat, wet sanding between each also, and that was it. Super easy and it turned out amazing!! Total coat was abut 30 bucks and a couple hours time.
