Replace Front bumper?

I understand that what I propose will be viewed by many of you as heresy.

I understand that many of you will scoff at my interest in modifying the JGC and say that sort of shenanigan isnt welcome here and needs to go back to the wrangler universe from whence if came...crawling.

However...Just in case there are one or two of you out there who have a hint of mud/dirt/grime in your veins, I finally have the nerve to ask the following question:

What aftermarket front bumpers have been tried on the WK2?

I like the lines of the factory bumper cover. But I dont think it will hold up well to the antler-laiden speed-bumps that are so prevalent in my part of the boonies. I am also concerned that the plastic bumper-cover whose designed purpose s to deflect air, may have a challenge fending off the front-end armor of other vehicles who enter their adjoining parking spaces at ramming speed and are hesitant to slow until they feel SIGNIFICANT resistance.

I have found options from ARB that look good, appear to have ports for the proximity sensors and say that they accommodate the forward-firing radar for the ACC.
Vehicle Page

But I was wondering if anyone else was aware of additional manufacturers who could present options to the ARB?

This would be for mounting on a loaded Summit.

Again...I understand that most of you will vehemently disagree with defacing the work of art that is the Grand Cherokee. And I mean no disrespect to the bloodline.

I simply seek to gild the lily...with a pinch of iron. (or perhaps durable aluminum)

Recommendations?

THX

V.

Re: Replace Front bumper?

It's your jeep, do with it as you please.

That ARB one is priiiiicceeeeey. You might dig around Chief and see if they have one Products | Chief Products. I don't know of any in the states off hand, but I'm sure others do if there are any.

Why not a brush/bull/nudge bar or setup as an alternate?

Just be aware that some aftermarket products may not work well with the Summit fascias...they are different than the other trim levels.

Unfortunately our little Deer here in Central Texas have a propensity for targeting the headlight region of vehicles during their kamikaze run to defeat humanity.

As a result, very few impact in the center portion of the bumper/grill/hood/windshield and the push-bar or "pouty-lip" would accomplish little true protection and actually do nothing for me other than reduce my approach-angle and front clearance.

I have been fortunate enough to have escaped the ire of the suicide-deer, but along my 130 mile daily commute I find clear evidence of roughly a dozen of so individuals who were less fortunate the preceding evening......that's a lot of body-work, dead bodies, and down-time.

I would like to think that all that fancy electronic sensor array in the nose that is supposed to drive for me...uhhhmmm...errr...."help" me drive....hopefully that would help me dodge the deer. But even though our white tail are comparatively pygmy deer compared to most of the world, they can still leave a nasty bruise at their point of impact and I dont wanna trust that to the gadgetry.

Re: Replace Front bumper?

Front bumpers are limited here in the states. ARB is pretty much it, RRO does make a hidden winch mount with a mild pre-runner hoop. Out of the states, Uneek 4x4 and ARB have somethings to offer in the land of Oz and the aforementioned chief products have some things in development.

Re: Replace Front bumper?

Well.....drat!

It looks like ARB and Uneek are my only "off the shelf" options for bumper replacement.

I currently have and love my bull-nose bumper on mt JKU made by "Ranch Hand" here in TX.
http://media.ranchhand.com/original/...1366137645.jpg

And Im spoiled to that build quality for a rational price tag of $500USD.

Both ARB and Uneek are triple that....but they have more bells and whistles.

I prefer the Uneek look and their claims of more durable construction sound inviting.

However, other forums I participate in have had rather disparaging things to say about Uneeks actual build quality, production reliability, and customer service.

All of which make me wonder....is it worth it? Is it better to just roll the dice, hope for continued good luck (partially attributable to vigilance) in dodging deer, and eat the cost of discourteous other-drivers pushing their noses against mine?

Its easy to see how many other drivers have hit deer. Its fairly easy to see and estimate how many close-calls I have had with critters and debris on the road. Its much harder to see how many idiots cannot park within their space and just keep pushing until something stops them. But based on the number of broken front plate brackets I see....there are lots of folks who dont know their limits.

When I replace the factory plastic front bumper on my Wrangler, it wasnt with the intention of using it as some sort of macho battering-ram....look how cool I am. But rather as a defensive measure to prevent being battered. Good fences make good neighbors, and there is little more effective than 3/16" diamond plate for defining how far is too far.

I like that with my bumper on my wrangler, either folks choose to be more careful because they dont wanna play eskimo-kisses with my front end....or...alternatively...my bumper is durable enough that I cannot tell when they get too close.

Soooo.... I am still inclined to put some sort of protection on my leading edge. Escpecially considering the amount of high-dollar equipment being housed in that nose-cone.

Fortunately....I have time to ponder the issue since I dont have a JGC to put it on....yet.

I greatly appreciate all of the recommendations.

V.

Maybe have someone custom build one like this?

Re: Replace Front bumper?

So it kinda looks like ARB is the only option for a replacement front bumper for the WK2.

Any other players that havent been addressed?

Re: Replace Front bumper?

Looking at their web site, it looks like Ranch Hand makes a good product. I just called them and they said bumpers for the WK2 are not on their radar. That is too bad. I asked the customer service rep to forward my interest up the chain of command, and the lady said she'd forward it to a (Debbie?).

A well-made American front bumper like the OP describes would be great.

Re: Replace Front bumper?

I was looking at the ARB for full bumper replacement but read about how much it weighs and possible issues with the air suspension always trying to compensate. Any comments about the weight issue?

What I really want is to not have to remove the lower plastic facia every time I want to go play off road. I take it off when I go to Moab. I think the full Uneek lower replacement is my favorite as far as all the others go.

I would not be able to install either solution myself so it would be nice to find a reseller that I can purchase and install. I have a better chance with the ARB but still not sure about the weight.

Re: Replace Front bumper?

Aside from the fact that ARB makes a very nice product, and it was designed as a functional roo bar. That being said, it doesn't bother you that it's a giant fat lip, blends poorly with the lines, is pretty complicated, heavy, easily $2k done, requires permanent modification to the substructure, destroying the factory bumper is mandatory, hope you have an 11-13?

I'm positive I can find a local to build one for 2 grand or you could buy 4 factory bumpers and paint them, kidding.

I grew up in NE, that's right go patriots, we had deer in the 200lb+ range that would charge you, and now I'm in Florida where the deer get outweighed by dogs. I've lost a handful of grills and a couple cars to deer so I get it. There's a 4 Wheel Parts in SLC they can acquire and install ARB and maybe help with others.
