Rock Rails & Xpel Ultimate PPF installed

The past 3 days were spent installing MOPAR rock rails on my 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland.

Also, paint protection film, in the form of Xpel Ultimate (with 10 year warranty) was applied - with a complete front bumper wrap, 18 inches up the front hood, the LED lights, the A pillars, all the rocker panels, the top roof to sunroof opening, and a couple small pieces by rear trunk ledge.

Picture intensive - enjoy!

2014 JGC Overland Rock Rails:

Xpel Ultimate paint protection film (look for lines and corners where applied to see it better)

Nice work. Now what are you going to do about those tires?

Thanks - looking into different 18" tires to replace the ones that came with the ORA-II package. I drove through a lot of snow today earlier and it actually did good in the near white out conditions for a while. I want a sturdier all terrain tire that is as wide as possible.

The rock rails look great.

Have people been complaining about paint chips on the GC?

How much did you pay to get the Xpel done?

Re: Rock Rails & Xpel Ultimate PPF installed

Those rock rails look amazing! Please tell more on how much they cost/install...and if the install was hard or not!

Do you think the stock front mud flaps can still be used with the rock rails?

Re: Rock Rails & Xpel Ultimate PPF installed

Paint on the Grand Cherokees, with base coat/clear coat is pretty thin - and impacted by sand, salt, gravel and other air borne objects - which is why I had the Xpel Ultimate film applied. Total cost was ~$900 - that included a full front bumper wrap, all rocker panels below the Grand Cherokee lettering, the A pillars, mirror caps, and the top roof from windshield to sunroof opening, also small pieces on the rear bumper ledge corners. He rounded all the corners so they won't catch on a microfiber or other type of towels. I used Kirby from Colorado Clear Bra in Arvada - he has installed over 15,000 vehicles and is by far, the best installer I've ever had do work for me. He is an artisan!

The rock rails cost $868 for the parts, and installation was 2.5 hours labor cost. However, the dealership I used was Pollard Off-Road in Boulder, where they specialize in high end highly modified Jeeps, including dropping in 6.4 liter hemi engines, Poison Spyder and other custom parts, etc. They told me they had installed many rock rails and would have no problems getting it done in 3 to 4 hours. Since I was going to be in the Denver/Boulder area, I set an an appointment for an installation.

Once I got to the dealership, they began the work at 800 AM. At 600 PM they brought the Jeep to me, and in near darkness I inspected the work, using the flashlight app on my iPhone 5S. I quickly discovered that 2 of the M8 flange bolts were missing completely, some nuts were overtightened, and others barely had grabbed a thread. I complained about the gaps, and had to return the next morning around 11 am. From 11 AM to 330 PM, I worked with their managers and technicians in trying to make sure the rock rails were installed properly. When I inspected the rock rails after they said they had done everything they could - the work was satisfactory, but not anywhere close to what I had expected, given their claimed level of "expertise". I have painstakingly gone over the installation instructions, as I almost attempted it 2 years ago on my '12 GC Overland.

In that case it took a nearby dealership 12 hours over 2 days to install the rock rails. In the case of the Boulder Pollard Friendly dealership it took them approximately 14 hours to complete. I overheard one of their managers say they might not try to install the rock rails on the GC's again. I think they are used to dealing with a lot of Wranglers. This shop has Jeeps listed at $115,000, including highly modified Grand Cherokees and Wranglers, plus they are an AEV dealership.

Having owned the rock rails before, I have to say I really like them and think the look completes the vehicle. It seems to have a lower CG (center of gravity) when they are installed, and definitely will protect your doors from parking lot fiends, and protect your rocker panels and lower doors if you are off road.

Re: Rock Rails & Xpel Ultimate PPF installed

My long lost twin! I have the same color combo and rails.

I bought the rails from justforjeeps.com and had them installed there (they are local and owned by the Jeep dealer I bought my JGC from).

I had a similar experience at the dealer, I paid for 2 hours labor, but they had the car for 2 days (thank god for loaners, they gave me a 2014 V6 JGC Overland to try out). They had screwed up my previous install appointment, so I got the rock rails at cost (~680) and got almost $100 off install as well. Installed I paid around $800 out the door.

They did do a solid job on the install, after their frustration on day 1, they took it to the body shop they have on site and they got it done perfectly. They definitely do greatly under estimate the install time/difficulty on these. I assume at some point the dealers will catch on and the install price is going to jump, so if you're thinking about it I'd pull the trigger sooner rather than later.

Re: Rock Rails & Xpel Ultimate PPF installed

Haha, I love reading about the MOPAR rock rails installed by shops. I did the install myself, and they have no clue what they are getting themselves into. Those things do not fir very well /tolerances aren't that good. They are a MAJOR PITA to install.

Rock rails should not be designed to be so difficult. I dread the day I ever have to replace them.

Re: Rock Rails & Xpel Ultimate PPF installed

I've heard that these things are a massive PITA to install, but then others say they're not too bad.

Anyone know of a link or able to post up the fitting instructions for a bit of a look?
