Roof Basket Owners.. How are you mounting your tire?

Hey! I hope all is well.

For those with a roof basket on their Jeep, how are you mounting your spare tire to it? I am looking at the available options and wanted to see what everyone is using and why.

Pic for attention!

Re: Roof Basket Owners.. How are you mounting your tire?

I'm sticking with stock size tires so they will fit under the floor. But if I had to, I have straps for the roof.

Create or find a u-bolt that straddles one of the cross-bars and goes through the lug holes.

Re: Roof Basket Owners.. How are you mounting your tire?

So I purchased the spare tire mount from Yakima and re-drilled the mounting plate to work with the Thule basket! Check it out;

Why doesn't anyone use the hitchgate (tailer hitch spare tire mount)? The roof seems like the absolute worst spot for a spare tire.

All of the hitch mount tire holders I have seen just stick out way too far. If they made a bumper mount for the WK2 like they have for the older WK, I would be interested for sure!

Yeah I agree, they do stick out a bit to far but they still offer much better accessibility and convenience. I'm currently looking for a hitch mount that hugs the WK2 tailgate as close as possible and doesn't cost a bazillion dollars.

top of my list is the one from Detours Offroad Hardware.

KnuckleBone Tire Carrier
Wow that is actually much closer than anything I have ever seen! Thank you for sharing! I agree it would be more convenient when needing the tire. The biggest problem (to me) would be the loss of my rear view camera, I love that dang thing.

Re: Roof Basket Owners.. How are you mounting your tire?

If you went for the rear mount, how would you get in the hatch, is it easy? At least on the roof it doesn't stop you from getting into the hatch.

Side note - I think your current setup is bada** I say leave it how you have it! Looks great

Hey, Hi Italian-job; Lou (Luigi, if you prefer!) from my 'Show & Tell . . .' ! How "uuz" doin' in the "Mich"?
My 2 cents - 'five.7 Hemi' has a point. Probably more to do with, that, I am not a fan of anything rooftop, except maybe a tent. As far as "sticking out," don't Bike Racks stick out far or farther? I know (when I had my Ram 1500) hitch storage baskets & boxes stick out far too, as I had a hinged fold-out basket for the truck. Plan to get another of the same for the G.C. come Spring for my Overland Journey to Colorado & beyond !
You only put the spare "up there" when go on your "excursions," right ? Seems like doing the Hitch thing be easier (on the back & arms) and you'll still have the roof for lots of the camping gear !? Just a thought ! It's ALL good cause it happens on a G.C. !
