Roof Rack

Has anyone purchased and installed a roof rack on the new WK2? I need something to carry a canoe with. Should I go ahead and purchase the MOPAR rack or wait for Thule or someone else to design something better?

Re: Roof Rack

For carrying a canoe (or 2) I find the Yakima rack is perfect, and much, much better than the OEM (which I used only once with a canoe). The round Yakima bars have better clearance above the roof and offer better geometry than the flat OEM bars for tying on ropes or attaching straps....the canoe definitely won't budge. But the biggest advantage is that the bars extend out slightly past the edge of the roof, so you if you carry the canoe on your shoulders you can easily just slide the canoe onto the rack without having to reach over the roof (no danger of scratching the paint). I can't comment on Thule racks as I never looked at them but I'm sure they must be good too.

Re: Roof Rack

Thule now has their rack towers available. Mine are in transit as I type.

Re: Roof Rack

I'm going with the Thule 460 foot pack and 4019 fit kit. That way I can use my other Thule stuff. Bruce

Re: Roof Rack

Installed my Thule rack today after receiving the 4019 fit kit. I had the towers, locks and Aero Bars from before. Great fit and very solid with very limited wind noise and it supplies a 31 1/2" spread (center to center) for carriers etc. No pics as the wife has it out right now but will post some later.

fireron-

Do you prefer the Aero Bars over the square bars? I have a bunch of accessories from my current setup, but picked up the 58" bars for the jeep. I know my bike racks and ski racks will work with adapaters, but will my cargo bag fit with this design? I have the ranger 90 with tension locks made for the square bars.

Thanks,
Albert

Re: Roof Rack

OMG Nevermind....I just bought the whole Aero setup off of REI. The 20% discount sure does help though.

Re: Roof Rack

The new 4019 fit kit for the JGC works very well. All of the bracketry on the inside is rubber coated making it a lot more rust resistant, not that there was a problem before. Enjoy!

Re: Roof Rack

The Thule fit guide suggests the 47 inch Aero bars for the WK2. I see someone mentioned 57 inch bars. What is the best length? I don't really need much overhang on each side.

Re: Roof Rack

The 47" bars would be the shortest you can use. Mine measure 54 1/2" wide and leave 5" overhang from the towers (pods) on each side. That being said, I had to modify mine by opening up the slots on the underneath side by 1" per corner to get them to fit. They needed to be able to come in closer together to fit the narrower rails vs my Commander. Easy job but I wonder if even longer Aero bars would need the same modification. Thule also recommends a maximum bar spread of 700 mm (27.55") for reduced wind noise.
