Re: Roof Rack Cross bars

I paid around $230 for the cross bars for my Laredo X. I dont know if they are standard for the overland or not. I do remember something from the Jeep Engineer chat where they estimated the increased drag from having the cross bars on dropped fuel economy by 1 or 2%, which was part of the decision to not include them.

Re: Roof Rack Cross bars

You can get them through a couple Jeep accessory websites for around $200ish. My dealer had a 10% discount on accessories so it was a little less. Kind of a PITA to install first time, once I realized what was happening it wasn't hard. Paper instructions are good for starting fires....

If you buy them make sure you drop the mounting bracket down as far as it will go to slide into rails on truck.

Re: Roof Rack Cross bars

Paid $210 for mine and rolled it into the total cost. I convinced them to install them for free. Seeing as how I was spending more than 40k that day.....paid around $100 for thule ski/snowboard rack at same time.

I bought mine from justforjeeps - - just installed them. As has been said elsewhere on this site, NOT a five-minute job, but if I had been a little less "type-A," it probably would have taken ten. I installed the front bar as far forward as possible, and left 21" inches of clearance between the open tailgate and the back bar. That leaves about a 27" spread, which I'm hoping will be enough for a Thule 686 or 687. (I have an email out to them, but if anyone has real life experience, I'd love to hear it!)

A few observations about installing the rack. Yes, loosen the top screws to drop the mounting bracket, but if you loosen them TOO much, the inner lock nut will not catch! So I'd suggest dropping them JUST enough to fit into the tracks.

Also, the paper instructions don't explain the "locking" mechanism. After you install the rack, you must unlock one of the end caps and slide the rubber stripping across the length of the rack -- then replace the end cap and lock. Not the best security, as anyone could slice the rubber stripping to get at the screws, but better than nothing, I suppose.

Re: Roof Rack Cross bars

Just posting an update. I did buy some Mopar cross bars through the dealer. Install was very easy. I did discover a challenge. When I move the cross bars to their widest point, my snowboard will not fit properly. I have always wanted a Thule Cargo Top. Merry Christmas to me

Re: Roof Rack Cross bars

I just received my bars and they took around 20 minutes to install. A couple of hints: 1) do loosen the inside bolt and the outside bolt but not too much 2) when you have them on the jeep rail, tighten the inside bolt first. This will straighten the tower. 3) remove the locks on the end to insert the rubber pieces. Note the shorter one goes on the rear 4) use some lubricant (WD40 worked for me) to easily slide the rubber prieces onto the crossbars.

They look good! Good luck.

I'm hoping for the same thing! Been looking at the 686 BXT (Atlantis 1600), which is 74", and from what I've heard from Thule, it looks like it will bend the stock antenna.

Also wondering if anyone has tried the Jeep box 82211181? At 71", it's 3" shorter than the Thule, and looks like it will JUST clear the antenna. Trying to find out if this box is indeed made by Thule? If so, I'll buy it instead of the 686 BXT.

I'm also going to repost this question in a "box" thread.
