Rooftop tent

I have recently purchased a 2014 grand Cherokee and in the lead up to purchasing, i found very conflicting info regarding roof rated (when static) weights. Well i bit the bullet and bought a rooftop tent. If anyone else is in the same boat I can confirm that it will hold the weight just fine. I'm 110kg and the tent is probably 50kg. It's a fantastic addition to your jeep.ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1428670003.188176.jpg

Re: Rooftop tent

Cool concept. I have not seen this before. I do a lot of back country camping so it would not meet most of my needs, but cool nonetheless. Enjoy your camping.

Re: Rooftop tent

Thanks. There's heaps of these tents here in Australia. But the ones I have seen have been on other SUV's and trucks. As I'm single with no kids it made more sense over a caravan. Besides, I just like heading off for 1/2nights max. Caravan would be overkill

Re: Rooftop tent

Who you share your tent with could be a determining factor. What you measure as static weight might not remain static through the night.

what brand tent is that? also, does it just mount to any set of crossbars (such as mopar or yakima)?

Re: Rooftop tent

The brand is "uptop campers" which I think are now shutdown. They are an exact copy of a TJM tent called the Yulara. I have since changed the direction of the tracks to have the tent fold out to the passenger side so I can attached the 2nd tent enclosure as per the photo. Yea it fits any crossbars. When I bought it, it wasn't going to fit the fatness of my mopar styled cross bars so i made up some new plates (easy and cheap to do).

Re: Rooftop tent

Does the hatch open when you mount the tent this way? I've mounted mine to open to the right side cause I thought that won't work...

Re: Rooftop tent

When you say hatch you mean the opening glass bit right? Mine being a my2014 does not have the hatch. As for the tailgate, the spoiler hits and can probably open maybe half a metre. It was annoying as I'd have to go in through the rear doors to access the cargo area. It suited the guy before me as his 4x4 had barn doors. So now I have turned it round like yours, I can connect the bottom tent part as the tent did not go far back enough toward the rear due to short roof rails if that makes sense. As for your hatch, I believe it would be able to open because you should have enough room between the ladder. I just don't know if the hatch would rest on the floor of the tent.

Thanks for your answer. Yep, I was talking about the glass opening separately.. As I've just finished a slide for my fridge, I think I'll leave the tent as it is. Happy camping :-)
