Arrow RRO Roof Rack With Tire

Learned the hard way that having the spare tire mounted on the roof, using a Rocky Road Outfitters Roof Rack, that the tire blocks the satellite antenna half of the time. When driving Southeast, South, or Southwest, the Sirius radio cuts in and out quite often. I'm sure it's the spare tire blocking the signal.

Choices are to install a new satellite antenna elsewhere, or not mount the spare on the roof. But when I go to a larger tire, the spare will probably need to go on the roof.

Any ideas?

Yeah, same problem here. I already put my spare tire back in place ( it doesn't fit perfectly but I dont care )

Re: RRO Roof Rack With Tire

Do you have the integrated AM/FM/SAT/GPS antenna or the seperate SAT antenna found on early 2011s ? It looks to me like the earlier revision antenna maybe in a better spot versus the single centered model. Best idea would probably be to just mount a new antenna somewhere near the windshield.

Since you are a fellow RRO rack owner, how do you deal w/ the wind noise from highway speeds? Are you using a fairing ?? Especially with a tire up there all the time.

Re: RRO Roof Rack With Tire

Mine is a 2011 and yes it make more noise with the rack and the lights but I don't care because it looks cool. With the sunroof closed is not bad at all. I think the combination of this and the off road tires make the Cherokee a little noisier but that's something I was willing to trade for better offroad capability.

Re: RRO Roof Rack With Tire

I also have a 2011 with the integrated FM/Sat antenna. I'll be installing a "shark fin" antenna soon, but know that won't change the sat reception.

I currently have four 6" off-road lights mounted on the roof rack. The wind noise I get from the rack is mainly because of the lights. While I hear the wind, I don't think it's terrible and can live with the slight noise I get. I didn't notice an increase in noise when I added the tire on top.

Like rpoverland, I'm willing to have the slight noise and slight decrease in mileage to have a better offroad capable Jeep.

I've thought of adding a separate Sat antenna up front, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. I also may just move the tire back down below.

Re: RRO Roof Rack With Tire

I bought a spare tire mount that attaches to my hitch receiver from TireGate. Here is a link to their website.
