Seat back plastics separating

Hey guys, I've done my searching and found this is a fairly common issue, just wondering if anyone has had any luck getting a new "redesigned seat back". Shortly after I bought my Jeep (used) I noticed the plastic of the back of the front seats was separating from the leather. I purchased a Max car protection plan, took my car to the dealer only to be informed that this wasn't covered and they wanted $900 for the repair. I tried explaining to them that I didn't want new seats, I just wanted the seat backs secured to the seats. Apparently this is a wear item....ridiculous. I of course tried to reattach the panel myself but the arm have already been bent over and are too weak to grab the seat. Now the passenger seat is apparently starting to have the same issue...

Thanks!

Re: Seat back plastics separating

I believe the replacement part is around $350 each, so I'm sure the extra is markup and labor. Would need year/model/trim/color to confirm.

Maybe try to find some used seats on ebay or a junk yard?

Well, I guess then you could consider anything a "wear item". It is never a good idea to try to fix that stuff yourself, then try to get is covered by warranty. Once you mess with it, you own it. They can simply say that they would have covered it, but the customer tampered with it when they tried to fix it themselves and messed it up.

I feel for you, but I think you are going to be stuck with this one...

Re: Seat back plastics separating

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. It baffles me that I spent the money for the MAXcare and they won't fix this issue, its's clearly not a wear item.

Thanks again

Re: Seat back plastics separating

Throw some power grab glue?

Joking... but ugh that they won't cover the wear.

Re: Seat back plastics separating

Anyone ever figure out a fix to this? It just started happening to the top right hand corner of the drivers seat on my 2011 GC Overland. It looks just like OP's first picture except only the top right hook is undone or broken. I am not sure if it can clip back on or not. Does anyone know?

Re: Seat back plastics separating

I have been wanting to replace mine as well. Mine are all scuffed and scraped up from my kids. Replacement seat backs can be had for around 150.00 each brand new. I am pretty sure they just clip in. Looks like there was some glue applied before. That is not correct. Probably some of the seat back clips have broken or maybe the hole where they clip into has been damaged somehow.

Re: Seat back plastics separating

Thanks for the info. That's not a terrible price, although I wish I could just get it to clip back in. From what I can see on diagrams and comparing to my panel the clip still seems to be in tact but doesn't connect/clip onto anything.

Re: Seat back plastics separating

Must confess I am ignorant of this problem on the seat back as mine are good so don't know if this helps,BUT my buddy had this problem on his BMW 5-Series ,he went to Home Depot and purchased Velcro with the heavy duty adhesive backs and that has worked for alittle over a year now and seems to not have moved at all, like I said, not knowing the configuration of the inside of the seat backs I don't know if this would be a problem solver or just a waste of money, just figured I would mention it in the hopes of saving someone some money and give a permanent solution to what is,an annoying and ugly problem.Must admit,it never occurred to me that Maxcare wouldn't cover something that is such an eyesore.I mean,I get it with the seats, cuts, wear etc,but something that could cause a nasty injury to a back seat passenger,God forbid,in the event of an accident,I would of thought it would be covered.Equally as bad, small hands will travel when bored, looks like some sharp bits back there that could hurt.Would hate to suffer my wife's withering stare if that happened.
Again, showing my lack of knowledge, would a strong double sided adhesive,( the same product that holds car trim in place, again,Home Depot sell that in red rolls)would that be able to be used?Again, not knowing the setup on the inside of the back seat,I am just offering up a suggestion, but not sure.

Seat back plastics separating

If it doesn't look like any tabs or clips are busted on the seat back... keep working with it trying to get it to hold on its own. My drivers side seat back popped out at the top shortly after buying it. Took me a good hour and 20 different tries to get it secure again remounting the entire back each time. It's been holding strong for well over a year now. If I remember... you got to get it mounted just right at the bottom for the top to hold.

I never could tell how the top part latches to the seat... but definitely nothing appeared broken. Finally got it with some effort and luck.

Edit... I remember now. With the bottom and sides snapped in (easy) push up on the upper curved area of the seat back with considerable force using both palms... like you're trying to stretch it longways... THEN push it in at top. That's how mine finally held.
