Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

Any instructions on going from the chrome rails to the "decorative" rails? I installed them but they do not sit flush to the roof. justforjeeps.com stated they may required modification to be used on jeep that did not come with them. I'm considering drilling out the rails to alow room for the factory rivets that are sticking up from the roof to make them sit flush. Any info is appreciated. Thanks

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

I'm at a bit of a loss, I'm afraid, as to why the black plastic rails won't sit flush on the roof of your Jeep. I strongly doubt that any sort of modifications are needed. However, I am away from my home at the moment until Wednesday. When I get home, I will inspect my set of black rails and see if I can come up with some suggestions. So, please sit tight until mid-week. Thanks --Stew

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

I'm back home now and I dug out my "retired" original black plastic decorative rails. I still can see no reason at all why these should not sit flush on the roof of your Jeep.

I think the next step if I'm going to be able to help you is to determine if we have the same rails. Also, I attached a few photos of various angles of my rails. Do your rails have a captive plastic washer at each of the six (6) fastening points as shown in my photos?

If you set the rails down on a flat surface such as a countertop, will they sit flush on the counter with the perimeter edge of the rails making contact with the countertop all the way around as shown in my first photo.

Let's see what sort of answers you come up with and we can take it from there.

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

Those are the same rails. The problem that i have is the 4 raised mounting rivets that are attached to the roof. You can see them in this illustration. When i install the rails that you have pictured.... they dont sit flush due to these raised mounting holes or rivets or whatever they are called.

I have the same rails that you have pictured. The problem is not with the rail itself but it is with those 4 raised mounting holes that are sticking out from the roof. When the flat rails are placed on top of them..... it doesnt sit flush to the roof. You can see them in this illustration

I want to thank tuned8e for coming thru and doing a pictured DIY on this. I just want to know why, after buying a $70K+ vehicle, I still have to buy the functional roof rails. I am dumbfounded as to why SRTs don't come with these, or at least as an option. It just don't understand the manufacture's reasoning. Ok, done with my ranting. I'll be installing these as soon as my rails come in.

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

I wanted to add, I had the flat non-functional rails on my SRT and when I took them off, I found the raised threaded mounting holes too. So those who want to go from bright rails to the flat black ones, the holes are not the issue. When I installed the bright rails on the SRT, they also don't sit flat on the roof. There is a little gap on the ends, front and rear. Not sure what the reason is, but I sure would like to know how the bright rails are attached from the factory, mainly the front and rear mounting points. Can anyone help me on that?

Go back to my post in May. There are some photos of the front and rear mounts I made with bolts and washers. The black bits on the chrome rails slide in and clip under the T bolt. Pictures from thatpost will help with my description. Tuned's posts describe it to.

I found the black plastic sits flush but the chrome bits didn't. They sit up on the plastic and the original mounts on cars with bright rails from the factory protrude to support the chrome rail. This is why I added some 5.5mm washers. This supports the chrome rails through the bolt hole and allows the bolts to be done up tight without deforming the rail and adds strength.
