Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

So after reading through this thread a few times, it's possible to get these rails to fit. What I'm trying to find out is, is the hardware implanted in my roof (2015 GC Altitude), the same hardware that would be in a GC that came with the rails from the factory. I'm looking to carry 2 large kayaks at once, and am worried about some cheap hardware holding these decorative rails in, ripping out on me.

Anyone with the Attitude/SRT decorative rails should read this thread here:
Whispbar roof rack pics on 2015 SRT

More importantly:

I'll throw the Thule up there tomorrow to show look. I am a firm believer in the cargo box for throwing extra gear in for trips etc…mine easily doubles my cargo capacity.

My Thule is so large I had to move the rack forward to the very front of the OEM holes, otherwise the rear hatch spoiler would have contact with the back of the box…if you have a smaller cargo box you can definitely move your rack further back.….worked out nice thus far….test fit went well.

Lots of pics here….

Hope this helps, I have the whispbar on order and will be here early this week. Have other mods planned but will post a thread here and in SRT forum when all is said and done.

So it takes 1 screw for each side of the rail to get attached? Looks weak to me if that were the case

meh. I doubt it's going anywhere. I bet you could stand on the roof and literally tug on those bars and they wouldn't move. super clean install.

Yes the hardware is the same. I bought a used set of rails off a 2011 grand cherokee. I used the hardware from my 2015 GC Altitude roof trim pieces to install them. I first painted them white to match my jeep. I also painted the mopar luggage rack white to match. Pretty happy with results. Now I just need to blackout the taillights and window trim, anyone know the best way?

Finally pulled the trigger

Thanks to all the info from this thread, I finally bought everything and set it up. Sand blasted and painted the chrome rails black to match the rest of the altitude. Factory cross rails. Used the hardware from the fake rails, but added a rubber spacer between the rail and my roof. That allowed me to crank down nice and snug without bending the metal rail. It also made me feel better about any water going down there. If your contemplating taking on this job, go for it. It's not that difficult and it does feel nice and sturdy.

All I need now is a quality rack for carry 2 large (12' & 15') ocean kayaks. Anyone have any ideas?!

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

regarding your kayak mount question

I have never used them but was looking at "Yakima JayLow Folding J-Cradle Rooftop Kayak Rack " , those look the most legit to me and have super solid reviews on amazon.

Tuned8e...do the factory bolts contain what appears to be a slotted head to allow the receivers at the front and back of the new/functional rails to be attached?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Followed this post closely made my own modifications to the front and back screws/washers (probably wasn't necessary) but this track is solid!

Thanks for sharing!
