Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

Can someone who has done this mod elaborate more on the "two piece" construction of the factory rails? Is it possible to pull the metal rails apart from the plastic covers? I'm thinking I might do this to my HA, but want to look into having the metal rail part powdercoated so it matches the rest of the Jeep.

Yup. They are two pieces. Separate easily. You would need to media blast the rail then powder coat - some guys have already done that.

I was hoping you'd respond. I was thinking they might have a clear coat on them, thus necessitating the media blasting. Do you have any idea where I could find pics from someone who has done this? Maybe their username? Thanks, I really appreciate it.

Ahh, its deep in here somewhere. I am not sure who did it exactly off the top of my head.

However, considering the rails are stainless it might even necessitate a chemical bath of some sort - I am not a metal coating expert. What I would do, is call up your local powder coating place and say "what exactly needs to happen to powder coat an item that is currently stainless..."

I'll do some searching and see what I can find. I've talked to a friend who works in powdercoating and he said the same thing. I don't have the functional rails, so I'm debating if I swap them on or if I just get a set of Whispbars that will mount to the trim bars. Thanks for the info.

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

I wasn't aware there was a rack that could attach directly to the nonfunctional decorative black roof rails that come on the Altitude/High Altitude models....do you have a link to the correct Whispbar?

I only ask as I'm about to try and undergo removing and replacing the nonfunctional rails

I've been trying to figure this out too and was also going to replace the rails on my HA. But then came across these Wispbars. I spoke to them on the phone the other day and they said we need the following from Wispbar

WB-s25 (the actual crossbars)
WB-K835 (the kit that fits the non-functional rails)

I'm gonna order them from REI one of these days.

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

I came across this setup as well in searching online:

https://www.etrailer.com/tv-review-r...rva126b-2.aspx

Took this video down to our local rack specialist and he contacted the rep at Rhino Racks who didn't recommend this set up. Has anybody tried this? Looks similar to the Whispbar set up as far as being able to use the stock decorative black rails rather than swapping out for functional rails.

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

So I just spoke to Jeep customer support on the phone. They did some researching to confirm, but the "decorative" side rails have just as much structural integrity as the "functional" ones. They said replacing mine with the functional wouldn't make it any stronger. So this makes me feel better about getting as set of Whispbars and calling it good. Good to hear I suppose...

well I coulda told you that

same bolt placement, same bolts. no difference. I used my whispbars with roof rack, HEAVY big 33"spare and more goodies off there while crawlin around on rocks putting it through hell. the base rails are just fine.

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

I think the question of structural integrity comes in because it is hollow. The bolt that secures the crossbar to the rail creates compression on the hollow rail. Over time this will degrade and crush down. The factory chromed bar distributes this effect over the length of the bar and to multiple mounting points that make direct contact to the bar itself, not hollow plastic, thus making it more structurally sound.

Good to hear. And I just wanted to hear it from Jeep's themselves. And if they ever compress or whatever, then maybe they can be replaced... Are they actually hollow?
