Ok let me explain this a little better.

On the functional rails you have 2 components, the
1) stainless rail
2) the housing for that rail (which is just the outter black plastic runner)

So, on the housing you have that one one side (it is actually the front the picture you grabbed) and then on the back side (side closest to rear of car) you see this:

So. We have either 5 or 6 bolts total on each side. (cant remember, I'm thinking 5 actually is right) Either way that doesn't matter, the housing gets its position on the roof from those 2 "holders" if you will.

Imagine having the first and the last bolt in the roof. (Closest to front and closest to rear) You take this housing and slide it from the back to the front until its locked in. Then you put the rail in and bolt all the middle ones down

Here is a very elaborate diagram, hopefully this makes it more clear

No problem, and you know - we all know this isn't the factory way this rail setup would have been installed but does it work? Yep.

Thumbsup tuned! Glad it worked out. The rack looks solid. Now go get some riding in.

Ah, got it. That clip covers the extra bolt in the front.

Thanks again man! Very helpful!

Yep - did this on first and last bolt so that housing could "lock" into position

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

Thanks Tuned. Those mountings look nice and solid. I'm wondering why Chrysler Australia are telling me it cannot be done. Must just be the end clips the other tracks mount to.

I'll tell you why - it's because the way I just did this isn't how it is supposed to be mounted. They don't want to be liable for half-assing it and have something go wrong.

Does it work the way I did it? Seems to be just fine
Would I put a lot of weight up there? Ehh - I don't know , it would be for you to decide. I am only going to have 4 snowboards up there max at any time.

I took my car through an automated car wash today (yes I know those washes can scratch your paint) and I don't see any leaks still via headliner or anything like that. Racks are on strong.

........
This is what I suspected, and it is the problem I am encountering when going to roof rack places trying to find an alternative replacement track system.

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

Does anybody know what the correct front and rear screws which the black plastic bit slips into looks like?

A step screw with the right step would allow it to be done tight to seal it nicely and then still allow the black plastic to slip in place.

Something like this Amazon.com: Step Torx Screw M6x23mm (2):Baja 5T,5SC: Toys & Games

That is just an image for the idea, I have no idea what size will be needed.

Hey - just an fyi - I have been on the expressway doing 75-80, I have run this through an automated wash.... drove through a tsunami - no leaks

If you want the OEM rails - I would recommend getting them and duplicating what I did. If you don't feel comfortable even then - then possibly go an alternative route. When I did the first and last bolt they are tight in there. Use loc tite if you are paranoid.

Re: Side Roof Rack Rails - NEED HELP PLEASE..

If I can source the parts I will be trying this for sure. The part number listed earlier come up on one site as the chrome bit. Does anybody know if the black plastic surround is a separate part number?
