Skid Plates = Better, Worse, Neutral For Rust?

Just curious what you think...Will the skid plates make any difference on the rate at which rust occurs?

I think it could speed up the rust rate because the salt (winter driving) could get caught between the skid plates / under body, and may not wear off as easily. But that's a complete guess and I've never had a vehicle with skid plates to experience this.

Skid plates will help with stone chipping on the underbody. But all in all it probably will not make a difference big difference.

They do make a huge difference though if you do your own maintenance. They become a giant pain in the ass when trying to access certain components. Although if you take it to the stealer, not a problem.

I had them on my KJ. They were great in that they protected the undercarriage when I skidded on rocks and logs. But they were a pain when I ran through mud or skidded on soft ground because mud would get caked up inside. You do have to remove them and clean behind them. I was still glad I had them, though.

if you do some serious offroading yes I recommend it but for daily driving not really ... the plastic skid plate that comes with factory right under the engine is sufficient assuming ur speaking about the WK

Thanks...I ordered the off road group II because I wanted Quadra-Drive II and Limited Slip rear so was just curious about the skid plates.

Did you order the Hemi? If so those should come standard with the engine on the overland...

Atleast on mine, '05, you have to take them off to change the oil, soooo hopefully you'd never have more than 3 months of build-up on them!

I've been wondering the same things about the skid plates: rust, mud, etc. Also the extra weight.

In the Mopar catalog PDF on w2kjeeps, there's a small picture of the front skid plate. Covers the area between the oil pan and front skirt, in order to protect the suspension and, possibly, radiator, too. Looks to have a 'hole' in it about about 5"x8", which I'd assume/hope is for access to the oil filter.

I have an '03 KJ which at last oil change I discovered is leaking fluid at the rear differential bushing, and also a bit of a leak at the tranny pan . I wonder if I had skid plates on it, if I'd be able to see such problems. No idea what the KJ skit plates cover.

Its like anything else depending what the leak is and where it is sometimes it has to be pretty big before you see it. But just think if you took it to a stealership to repair they probably would charge you extra time for labor to remove the skid plate if it was necessary.

Or if you fix it yourself YOU will be pulling off the plates to gain access.

The KJ skid plates, at least on my '06 Renegade, covered a good bit but still allowed you to see what was going on up there. They did not have to be removed for oil changes as they had one hole for access to the oil pan drain plug and one hole to allow the oil from removal of the filter. When I changed the TC and front diff oil at 30k on that car, however, I did have to remove the skid plates for access. They were easy to remove (at most 8 bolts, IIRC), and I never had to remove them to be able to see what was going on with the underside of the engine, tranny, TC, diff, etc.
