Very good idea, especially for travel. These usually can be used for both cooling things and alternatively keeping stuff warm and also usually come with a power supply that you can use in a hotel room, etc., so stuff stays cold for the subsequent day's driving.

Personally I'd use glass or stainless steel containers for emergency water reserve for an infant (leaving room in the container for volume expansion if it freezes). Stainless would obviously be more durable in the spare compartment storage.
I didn't even think about the chemical leaching... Very smart.

New parents...sheesh. You'll be taking a bag with a bib, clothes, empty grocery bags, and diapers everywhere you go. In this bag keep a few of the pre-mixed bottles of individual use formula. You'd never want to use these every day or you'd go broke. Done and done.

And congrats on the new one...the real trip starts with the 2nd.

I have three kids and find their stuff under the rear passenger seats all the time. Maybe that would be a good spot.

This.

There is a fair amount of storage under the rear seat. I keep most of my supplies there in bags or loose depending on size.

As for the formula, if it's powder you should be fine if it's still sealed and then grab yourself 3 or 4 half gallon sized water bottles and you should be good. I say 1/2 gallon because they're usually thin and lay down nicely.

Re: So where would you guys store water?

Guys talking about formula, on a truck forum, this is great.

Let's think about this. Formula is a substitute for breast milk which is naturally warm from mommy's boob. Bottled water added to powdered formula would ideally be warmed to the same temp. How many of us held bottles under running hot water (burning the crap out of your hands) to warm up a bottle? Back in the day, parents would put bottles in heated water on the stove b/c the milk was kept in the fridge and babies naturally want warm milk. I know some parents actually microwave the milk or formula. No need for coolers.

This is assuming that you have not premixed the formula. I am assuming that you have sealed powdered/dehydrated formula and you are keeping it with separate stored water. Chemical leaching would theoretically be an issue if subjected to high temps (microwaving) or for prolonged periods of time.

I am done with bottles and night time feedings. Any tips for potty training would be welcome though. Damn diapers are expensive. I could have afforded the HK upgrade.

Congrats on the new addition to the team, it is fun and worth the sleepless nights.

Re: So where would you guys store water?

I have a Maxcold cooler that I use. It has a pouch for snacks & powdered drinks in it when we head out. It will hold about 8 bottles of water give or take & we just throw the water in when we head out. I would also take the diaper bag with the normal items in it as well - the water & formula may fit in there as well.
