Re: Solution to stiff seats?

I'm happy with the seat firmness in the LTD, but the missus doesn't like it at all. Had to get sheepskin seat covers.

My dad actually had one of those! It was a company car and it killed his back. He ended up having to get rid of it because of the seats.

It was a bit relieving to hear that the seats either get softer or you get used to them. My biggest fear is that neither of those would happen. I know technically the MDX would be considered a "Luxury SUV" (even though you get more options with the jeep at a cheaper price) but I would have never expected the seats to be such a drastic difference in terms of comfort

While I agree they are definitely firm, I like them. Just traveled 8 hours today in my new Overland without an issue.

Limited (Std)....#6 Foam
Limited (Lux II)....#1 Foam
Overland....#5 Foam
Summit....#3 Foam
SRT (Suede Perf)....#4 Foam
SRT (Laguna)....#7 Foam

To the best of my knowledge, higher number is firmer as I know for a fact the Overland #5 seats are physically stiffer/firmer than my #3 Summit seats. I acknowledge many like that firmness but my pref is for the best mix of sporty firmness for seat "fitting" me and luxury for cruising comfort. IMHO they got the Summit just right. So, relatively speaking, SRT's w/ Laguna seats (#7) have rocks for seats and Lux II Limiteds (#1) have squishers and other models/trims fill in between.

Other things like seat material, seat shape, bolster config, seat surface material, vented/non-vented, position, etc.. all affect perceived seat comfort but the base foam density has the most? impact on overall impression.

I have no idea where you got that from but there is absolutely no difference between my Limited Lux 2 ventilated seats and my buddy's Overland ventilated seats, apart from the stitching.

I agree, somewhere I came across a post where that number had nothing to do with the stiffness, but it had to do with the foam kit and how it is cut for a specific seat set.

I test drove several Limited's with the LUX and without. The LUX felt a little softer, but if that chart is correct:
Limited (Std)....#6 Foam
Limited (Lux II)....#1 Foam
My current seats should feel like brick and the LUX should be like sitting on a sponge.

Regardless I think all seats break in over time, so I would much rather start with a seat that is a little too stiff than one that is already too squishy.

So my post starts out with "FWIW" and is loaded with qualifiers and thats your response? Whatever...

The chart is 100% accurate, feel free to look up your own by VIN at the jeep.com equipment listing site.

So foam density had nothing to do with seat stiffness or comfort? Intetesting concept. Re-read my post for all my "foam density is not the end-all" qualifiers.

Out...

I tried to find more information about the # referring to the firmness. I did find a post on another forum from Christmas day 2014 that seemed to confirm what you are saying. Then I realized it was your post.

Can you enlighten us as to the source of this information, other than random posts on the internet? You say you are 100% sure about this, but I haven't been able to find anything from Jeep.

Mind you, I'm not saying it isn't true, but I'm curious how you are so sure.

Re: Solution to stiff seats?

Wow, someone is a little touchy...

In all of my searches you are the only one I have found that references that as being how soft or firm the foam is.

And yes from my build sheet:
C1FP #6 Seat Foam Cushion

But like I said before, IF the #6 has to do with the firmness I would be sitting on bricks (mine is a Limited) and the LUXII ones I drove would have been stupidly soft. But in reality they were only marginally softer.

I never called you a liar, just saying I don't think that the number there reflects the foam density directly. I may be wrong, but its just my opinion based on over a dozen test drives in a one month period of 2015 MY WK2's.

Back to the OP, every vehicle I have owned, the seats did soften up some and break in over time. Because of that I would rather start with a overly firm seat so after time it is comfortable, one of my previous vehicles had foam soo soft that after 50000 miles the foam did not hold up and the seat actually caused back pain.

Also for what it's worth (as if I am expected to keep abreast of all Internet acronyms), the gentleman is implying that FCA/Jeep is using 6 grades of foam. #1, #2, # 3, # 4, # 5, # 6 and even # 7. There are at least two considerations as to why this information might not be true:

1) Based on personal experience, with my calibrated ass, there is no difference between my ventilated Lux II package on the Limited and the Overland ventilated seats other than the stitching and the logo. Yet according to the information provided, this difference is significant: #1 vs. #5 foam. And if the higher the number the firmer the foam, it means I would be sinking in those seats which is hardly the case. It also conflicts the theory that paying for upgraded seats via the Luxury package would get the customer upgraded seats. Based on the info referenced by the gentleman, there are no shittier seats than those in the Limited (a mid-trim car) with an upgraded package costing a few grand.

2) It certainly makes sense for a manufacturer to have several grades of foam - one for cloth seats, one for regular leather seats, one for ventilated seats, and another one for a sportier seat and maybe another one for ultra luxury. At the end of the day, in the Grand Cherokee line-up you have just cloth seats, regular leather seats (with different leather); ventilated leather seats; and "sportier" bucket seats. Whatever the case, it just doesn't justify 7 grades of foam. If I were an accountant for FCA, I would certainly bring into question the foam expenditures. There's no need for that many grades.

I'm surprised Marlon hasn't stepped in and set the seat foam issue straight.

Sometimes, you guys know more about the Jeep than I do...

There is definitely a difference in foam, depending on the trim level, but since the seats come to the plant pre-made... I don't know much about them.
